The WAVLINK AC1200 is a weatherproof dual-band wireless access point that can also work as a range extender or mesh node. It is meant for places a normal indoor router can't reach well: a backyard, a workshop, a barn or a courtyard. Here is what its specifications mean and what to think about before putting one outside.
What AC1200 means
AC1200 is a combined figure. WAVLINK rates the unit at up to 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which add up to roughly 1,200 Mbps. Those are theoretical link speeds, not what a single device will download at. In general, 5 GHz is faster but covers less distance and is more affected by walls, while 2.4 GHz travels further. The unit follows the IEEE 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n standards, so older devices can connect too. WAVLINK says it is built around an MT7621A chipset and can serve up to 96 devices at once.
Antennas and coverage
The extender has four detachable omnidirectional antennas, each rated at 7 dBi, two for each band. Antenna gain describes how the signal is shaped: a higher figure typically pushes more of it outward in a flat, wide pattern rather than up and down. That suits mounting on a wall or pole with the clients spread around at roughly the same height. Because the antennas detach, they can be removed for transport or swapped as the manual allows. The brand also describes automatic channel selection to avoid conflicts with nearby networks.
Three modes, plus Easy Mesh
The device supports three operating modes:
- Access point mode: a network cable carries the connection from your router, and the unit broadcasts Wi-Fi.
- Repeater mode: it picks up an existing Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it.
- Mesh extender mode: with Easy Mesh support, it can work alongside compatible Easy Mesh routers and access points.
A wired link to the main router is generally more reliable than a wireless one, because a repeater has to use part of its radio capacity to talk back to the router.
Power over Ethernet and ports
The unit has integrated active PoE, so one RJ-45 cable can carry both power and data. That helps where there is no outdoor outlet, since only a low-voltage cable needs to be run. It has two Gigabit LAN/WAN ports that also work at 10/100 Mbps. The box includes a PoE converter and a power adapter, so check which one suits your installation.
Built for the weather
WAVLINK lists an operating range of -30°C to 70°C (-22°F to 158°F), a weatherproof enclosure, 15 kV ESD protection and 4 kV lightning protection. Those are the brand's own figures. Any outdoor installation should still follow the manual on mounting, sealing the cable entries and grounding.
What's in the box
The package includes the access point, two 2.4 GHz and two 5 GHz antennas, a network cable, a power adapter, a PoE converter, a mounting holder, two cable ties, a screw kit and a quick start guide.
Who it suits
It suits homes with a garden, outbuildings or a patio that the indoor Wi-Fi doesn't cover, and small sites such as workshops or campgrounds that need coverage across an open area.
What to check before you buy
- Where it will mount: a clear line of sight to the area you want to cover works better than obstructions.
- How it connects: decide between a wired uplink and repeater mode, and run the cable you'll need.
- Power: confirm whether you'll use PoE or the power adapter, and where the injector will sit indoors.
- Mesh compatibility: if you want mesh, check your router supports Easy Mesh.
- Device load: a very busy network depends on the uplink as well as the extender.
