The VEVOR SPT-504-12A is a 12U open frame rack for network switches, patch panels, servers and AV equipment. It can stand on the floor or be fixed to a wall, and its open design leaves the equipment accessible from several sides.

What 12U means

Rack height is counted in units, abbreviated U, where one U is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) of vertical mounting space. A 12U rack therefore offers 12 units of space, or 21 inches of mounting height, for standard 19-inch rack equipment. A typical switch or patch panel takes 1U, and many servers take 1U to 4U.

Open frame design

Unlike a closed cabinet, an open frame rack has no doors or side panels. That makes cabling and moving equipment easier, and air flows freely around the gear. The trade-off is that equipment is exposed to dust and passing contact, and nothing locks. It suits a spot such as a utility room, a classroom closet, a small office or a retail back room, where access matters more than enclosure.

VEVOR says the 23-inch (585 mm) depth helps in tight spaces while still taking servers and network gear, and lets you reach ports and devices from multiple angles.

Weight capacity

The listing gives two limits: up to 500 lbs (226.8 kg) when floor-standing and 200 lbs (90.7 kg) when wall-mounted. The difference is large and worth planning around. A wall-mounted rack depends on the wall, the anchors and the fixings, so the lower figure applies and the wall must be able to carry it. The frame is carbon steel, and VEVOR mentions reliable weld quality.

Extras and what is in the box

A top shelf gives extra storage space. The accessory kit includes two trays, a screw set, a top panel, 16 cage nuts, a grounding wire and a user manual. Cage nuts are the square nuts that clip into the rails so equipment can be screwed on. The grounding wire is there so the frame can be bonded to ground, in line with the manual and local requirements.

The rack measures about 23 by 20.1 by 24.6 inches and weighs 30.9 lb.

Who it suits

VEVOR lists retail spaces, classrooms, offices and other areas where space is limited. In practice that means home labs, small business networks and AV closets.

What to check before you buy

  • Equipment depth: compare your deepest device against the 23-inch rack depth, including cables at the back.
  • Total weight: add up everything you plan to mount, and compare with 500 lb (floor) or 200 lb (wall).
  • Wall type: if wall mounting, confirm the wall and the anchors you will use can bear the load.
  • Rack standard: confirm your gear is standard 19-inch rack equipment.
  • Dust and access: an open rack has no doors; consider where it will sit.
  • Airflow and power: leave room for ventilation and for power strips.
  • Grounding: follow the manual and local codes.
