The Ubiquiti UniFi USW-Pro-24-PoE is a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch that can power devices over the same cable that carries their data. It belongs to Ubiquiti's UniFi Enterprise System and adds Layer 3 features and two 10-gigabit fibre uplinks. It suits a network that has outgrown a basic unmanaged switch and needs to run cameras, access points and phones from one box.
What Layer 3 means here
A basic switch only moves traffic within one network (Layer 2). A Layer 3 switch can also route between networks. Ubiquiti lists inter-VLAN routing, static routing and a DHCP server among the switch's Layer 3 features. In practice, that lets you split a network into separate VLANs, for example one for staff, one for guests and one for cameras, and have the switch pass traffic between them without sending everything through a separate router.
Static routing means you define routes by hand, rather than the switch learning them from other devices. It is a good fit for small and medium networks that don't change often.
Ports and PoE power
The 24 copper ports are split as the listing describes: 16 Gigabit PoE+ ports and 8 Gigabit PoE++ ports. PoE+ (802.3at) is typically rated at up to 30W per port. The eight PoE++ ports use 802.3bt, and Ubiquiti says they provide up to 64W per port for high-power devices such as larger PTZ cameras, some wireless access points and similar equipment.
Power over Ethernet means a single cable gives a device both data and power, so you don't need a nearby outlet or a separate adapter for each camera or access point. Ubiquiti says the remaining ports offer 802.3af/at PoE.
Two SFP+ uplinks for fibre
Two SFP+ ports sit alongside the copper ports. Ubiquiti says they support uplinks of up to 10 Gbps, whether you connect to a storage server or run a long link to another switch. SFP+ ports take separate modules or cables, so what you plug in decides the distance and the medium (fibre or a direct-attach copper cable). The modules are not part of the switch itself, and the listing's only included component is the switch.
Cooling and power backup
Ubiquiti describes the cooling as near-silent, with fans under PWM control, air ducts, covers and temperature sensors, so that the switch can sit in a workspace and not only in a closed equipment room. Fan-cooled switches still make some noise, and it depends on load and temperature.
The switch also has an external DC input, Ubiquiti's USP RPS interface, for a redundant power supply. If the internal power supply fails, the backup can carry on. The redundant unit is a separate accessory.
Who it suits
The USW-Pro-24-PoE fits an office, a small business or an advanced home network that already uses UniFi equipment, or plans to. It is managed through Ubiquiti's UniFi software, so it makes most sense when the rest of the network is also UniFi. The listing gives its dimensions as 19.7 x 1.8 x 11.8 inches and its weight as 8.4 lb.
What to check before you buy
- PoE needs: add up the power your devices draw and compare it with the switch's total PoE power, which is in Ubiquiti's specification sheet.
- Device standards: check whether your high-power devices need 802.3bt, and plan to plug them into the eight PoE++ ports.
- Uplinks: decide whether you will use SFP+ at all, and buy matching modules or cables if you will.
- Management: confirm that you have, or are willing to set up, the UniFi software that controls the switch.
- Rack space and airflow: check the mounting method, depth and clearance for the fans.
- Noise: a switch in an office or living space is more noticeable than one in a closet.
The short version
- A 24-port Layer 3 switch: 16 Gigabit PoE+ ports and 8 Gigabit PoE++ ports (802.3bt, up to 64W each, per Ubiquiti).
- Two SFP+ ports for uplinks of up to 10 Gbps.
- Inter-VLAN routing, static routing and a DHCP server.
- Fan-cooled with temperature control, and an external redundant power input.
- Best suited to UniFi-based networks; SFP+ modules and the redundant power unit are extra.
