The Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Pro (model U6-Pro-US) is an indoor dual-band WiFi 6 access point for homes and offices. Unlike an all-in-one router, an access point does one job: it turns a wired network connection into wireless coverage. Ubiquiti positions this one for places with many connected devices, and quotes support for more than 300 concurrent clients.

What an access point does

A router connects your network to the internet. An access point connects to that router or switch by cable and adds WiFi in a particular spot. Offices, larger homes and multi-storey buildings often use several access points, ceiling-mounted and wired back to a central switch, rather than one router in a corner. The U6 Pro is managed with the UniFi Network application, and Ubiquiti says it can be set up in minutes.

Reading the WiFi 6 numbers

WiFi 6 is the name for 802.11ax. The U6 Pro is dual-band, with two radios:

  • 5 GHz: 4x4 MU-MIMO, rated at 4.8 Gbps. Four spatial streams and MU-MIMO let the access point talk to several devices at once instead of one after another.
  • 2.4 GHz: 2x2 MIMO, rated at 573.5 Mbps. This band typically reaches further and passes through walls better, but it is slower and more crowded.

Ubiquiti adds the two together to quote an aggregate throughput of 5.3 Gbps. That is a combined ceiling across both radios, not the speed any single phone or laptop will see. Real speeds depend on the device, distance, walls, interference and your internet connection.

160 MHz channels

The access point operates at full 4x4 MIMO with 160 MHz channels. Wider channels typically carry more data per client, and Ubiquiti says this supports high-capacity wireless uplinks and faster transfers. They need a client device that also supports 160 MHz, and in busy areas wide channels can be harder to keep clear of interference.

Many clients, guest traffic

The 300+ client figure is a capacity figure. Ubiquiti says the access point keeps wireless service "even and reliable" under that load. It also offers guest traffic isolation, which keeps guest devices apart from the rest of the network. The listing says this improves wireless security and lowers congestion.

Mounting and power

The box includes a universal mounting plate, a backing plate and a screw kit. The unit measures 7.8 x 7.8 x 1.4 inches (about 20 x 20 x 3.6 cm) and weighs 2.6 lb (about 1.2 kg). It is powered over Ethernet (PoE), but a PoE adapter or injector is not included and is sold separately, so you need a PoE switch or an injector.

Who it suits

It suits homes with demanding setups, small and medium offices, and anyone building a UniFi-managed network who wants more capacity than a basic access point. As an access point, it needs a separate router or gateway.

What to check before you buy

  • PoE source: you need a compatible PoE switch or injector; none is included.
  • Cabling: check that Ethernet can reach the mounting spot, ideally at least Gigabit.
  • Router or gateway: this unit adds WiFi only.
  • Controller: it is managed through the UniFi Network application, so confirm where you will run it.
  • Client devices: WiFi 6 benefits depend on your phones and laptops supporting it.
  • Region: the listing is the US model, so check the regulatory and power details for your country.

The short version

  • An indoor dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) access point.
  • 5 GHz at 4x4 MU-MIMO (4.8 Gbps) and 2.4 GHz at 2x2 MIMO (573.5 Mbps); 5.3 Gbps aggregate.
  • 160 MHz channels, 300+ concurrent clients and guest traffic isolation.
  • Mounting kit included; PoE adapter sold separately.
  • Managed with the UniFi Network application.
