The TRENDnet TPE-082WS is a 10-port Gigabit switch with web-based management and Power over Ethernet. It has eight copper PoE+ ports and two SFP slots for fibre. It sits between a basic unmanaged switch and a full enterprise switch, giving small business networks features such as VLANs and traffic prioritisation through a web page.

What "web smart" means

A web smart switch is managed through a browser. You log in and set up VLANs, port limits and other options, without a command line. TRENDnet says that it offers a mix of small-business management features for easy deployment. The listing also describes L2+ features, which include IPv4 and IPv6 static routing at the switch, which can free up router resources.

Ports and PoE power

There are eight Gigabit PoE+ ports and two SFP slots. TRENDnet says each PoE+ port supplies up to 30W, with a total of 75W of PoE power and a switching capacity of 20 Gbps. The 75W limits the sum: eight devices at 30W would need 240W, so the switch suits devices that draw less, such as many IP cameras, VoIP phones and access points. Add up your devices' draw before you plan.

The SFP slots take fibre or copper modules, sold separately. They allow long-distance links, which copper cable typically can't manage beyond 100 m.

Traffic management features

The listing names a wide set of controls. In plain terms:

  • VLANs (802.1Q, asymmetric, voice and GVRP) separate a network into isolated groups. A voice VLAN lets you keep phone traffic apart from ordinary data.
  • QoS and 802.1p CoS give some traffic, such as voice or video, priority when the network is busy.
  • LACP (802.3ad link aggregation) groups several ports into one logical link between switches, for more bandwidth.
  • RSTP and MSTP prevent loops, and loopback detection catches cabling mistakes.
  • IGMP/MLD snooping limits multicast traffic, which the listing links to better IP surveillance performance.
  • Dynamic ARP inspection is described by TRENDnet as helping protect connected devices from man-in-the-middle attacks.

Monitoring and troubleshooting

RMON, SNMP, SNMP traps, syslog and port mirroring give administrators ways to watch the network. A cable diagnostic test and traffic statistics help locate faults. TRENDnet also offers Hive, a cloud management service for remote monitoring; the listing notes that an additional fee applies for it.

Build

The switch is fanless, so it makes no fan noise. It is rack-mountable and described as all-metal, with lifetime manufacturer protection. The listing gives its size as 14.0 x 15.0 x 3.0 inches (shipping dimensions probably) and its weight as 2.0 lb.

Who it suits

It suits small offices and installers who need PoE for a modest number of devices, and who want to segment traffic or prioritise voice and cameras. If you need only plug-and-play ports, a simpler unmanaged switch may do.

What to check before you buy

  • PoE power: compare the 75W total with your devices' combined draw.
  • Management skills: VLANs and QoS require some network knowledge to set up properly.
  • SFP modules: buy matching modules if you plan to use fibre.
  • Cloud service: Hive is optional and carries an extra fee.
  • Mounting: confirm rack or shelf space and the ventilation clearance.
  • Warranty terms: read the conditions of the lifetime protection.

The short version

  • 8 Gigabit PoE+ ports (30W each) and 2 SFP slots, with 75W of PoE power and 20 Gbps switching capacity.
  • Web-based management with VLANs, QoS, LACP, SNMP and static routing.
  • Fanless, rack-mountable metal switch.
  • Optional Hive cloud management at an extra fee.
