The TRENDnet TEG-S762 is a compact six-port network switch that goes beyond standard gigabit speeds. It has two 10G ports and four 2.5G ports, all using ordinary RJ-45 sockets. It's an unmanaged switch, which means you plug devices in and it works, with no setup screens. This page explains what the port speeds mean and where such a switch fits.

What the ports do

The TEG-S762 has four 2.5GBASE-T ports and two 10G RJ-45 ports. TRENDnet says the 2.5G ports provide speeds of up to 2.5Gbps over existing Cat5e or better cabling. That detail matters because 2.5G can often reuse the cable already in a wall, whereas 10G typically calls for Cat6a for longer runs.

A typical use is to connect the two 10G ports to a fast computer, a network storage device or another switch, and use the 2.5G ports for devices with multi-gig connections, such as newer PCs, Wi-Fi access points and some routers.

Switching capacity

TRENDnet rates the switch at 60Gbps of switching capacity. Add up the ports at full speed in both directions (2 x 10G and 4 x 2.5G, each counted twice) and you get 60Gbps, so the switch is built to handle all ports running flat out at the same time. In practice, the connected devices and the cabling set the speed you actually see.

Build and installation

The housing is compact and made of metal, and the design is fanless, so it makes no fan noise. The listing gives the size as 7.0 x 5.7 x 1.3 inches (about 17.8 x 14.5 x 3.3 cm). It sits comfortably on a desk and can also be mounted on a wall.

Compliance and support

TRENDnet lists the switch as NDAA and TAA compliant, a point that matters mostly to government customers and some businesses with procurement rules. The brand also offers lifetime manufacturer protection and English-language technical support during business hours. Both are stated as applying in the United States and Canada only, so check the terms elsewhere.

Who it suits

It suits people who want to add multi-gig links to a home or small-office network without managing a complex device. Examples include connecting a workstation to network storage at 10G, or feeding several 2.5G devices from one place.

What to check before you buy

  • Cabling: 2.5G generally works over Cat5e or better, while 10G runs are best planned with Cat6a. Check what is installed.
  • Device ports: confirm that your computers and storage devices actually have 2.5G or 10G network ports.
  • Management needs: this model is described as a multi-gig switch with ease of use, so if you need VLANs or monitoring, check the full specification.
  • Not PoE: the listing doesn't describe any power-over-Ethernet, so check before powering cameras or access points from it.
  • Placement: decide on desktop or wall mounting and check what mounting hardware is in the box.
  • Warranty region: read the terms for where you live.
