The TRENDnet TEG-S3160 is a 16-port unmanaged Ethernet switch in which every port runs at up to 2.5 Gbps. It joins wired devices into one network: computers, access points, network storage, cameras and the like. Because it is unmanaged, there is nothing to configure: you plug it in, connect cables and it works.
What 2.5G ports mean
Each of the 16 ports is an RJ-45 jack using 2.5GBASE-T. TRENDnet lists speeds of 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps, so older gigabit devices connect without trouble and the ports negotiate the speed automatically. The 2.5G standard is designed to run over existing Cat5e or better cabling, which is why people often upgrade to it from gigabit without rewiring. Speed only increases when both ends of a link support 2.5G, such as a PC with a 2.5G network port and a matching router.
Switching capacity
TRENDnet gives an 80Gbps switching capacity. The figure is the total throughput of the switch's internal fabric. With 16 ports at 2.5Gbps in both directions, the total is 80Gbps (16 x 2.5 x 2), so the switch is designed to handle every port at full speed at the same time without becoming a bottleneck.
Unmanaged, with LED indicators
An unmanaged switch has no web interface, VLANs or traffic rules. It suits homes, small offices and workshops where you want simple connection. LED indicators show port activity and speed, which helps when checking a cable or device. If you need VLANs, monitoring or port control, look at a managed switch instead.
Metal housing and mounting
The case is metal, with a desktop footprint of about 11.3 x 5.0 x 1.1 inches (roughly 29 x 13 x 3 cm) and a weight of 2.2 lb (about 1 kg). TRENDnet says it can be wall mounted. The description adds that included rackmount brackets suit wall or 19-inch 1U rack installation. Check the manual for mounting instructions.
Fanless design
The switch has no fan. TRENDnet says this lowers energy consumption and removes operating noise, which suits a desk, living room or shared office. Fanless devices rely on the case and surrounding airflow to shed heat, so leave room around the switch.
Support and compliance
TRENDnet says the switch has lifetime manufacturer protection, available in the U.S. and Canada only, with English-speaking support during normal business hours. It is listed as NDAA and TAA compliant, which matters to buyers who supply government customers; this is also for the U.S. and Canada only. Read the terms on the manufacturer's site.
Who it suits
It suits a home office, a multi-gig home network, a small business, or a media or network-storage setup where several devices benefit from speeds above gigabit.
What to check before you buy
- Devices: confirm which of your devices have 2.5G ports, as only those gain extra speed.
- Uplink: check that your router or main switch can carry the traffic you expect.
- Cabling: Cat5e or better is expected; check longer runs.
- Power: confirm the power arrangement and nearby outlet in the manual.
- Mounting: check wall or rack placement and clearance.
- Features: if you need VLANs or monitoring, an unmanaged switch won't offer them.
The short version
- 16 x 2.5GBASE-T RJ-45 ports that also run at 10/100/1000Mbps.
- 80Gbps switching capacity; unmanaged, so no setup.
- Fanless metal case with wall mounting and included rackmount brackets.
- Lifetime protection and NDAA and TAA compliance (U.S. and Canada only).
