The TRENDnet TEG-S25D is a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet desktop switch. It adds wired network connections for computers, printers, access points, cameras and other devices, and it works with no setup beyond plugging in cables. This page explains what its specs mean and what to check first.
What a switch does
A network switch connects wired devices on the same local network and passes traffic between them. This one has 24 RJ-45 ports, each running at Gigabit speed. TRENDnet describes it as plug and play, which usually means an unmanaged switch with no settings to configure. It connects to your router with one cable, and your devices connect to the other ports.
Speeds and capacity
Each port supports 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps. TRENDnet lists the Gigabit data rate as 2000 Mbps in full duplex. Full duplex means sending and receiving at the same time, so 1000 Mbps in each direction adds up to 2000 Mbps.
The switching capacity is 48Gbps, with a forwarding rate of 35.71Mpps for 64-byte packets. Switching capacity is the total the switch can handle across all ports at once. For 24 ports at 1Gbps full duplex, 48Gbps is exactly enough that the switch should not be the bottleneck inside a local network (24 ports x 2Gbps). Your internet speed, router and devices still set real-world limits.
Fanless metal design
The switch is fanless, which TRENDnet says reduces energy use and removes operating noise. That suits quiet spaces such as a home office. It has a metal enclosure, and an internal universal power supply (100 to 240VAC, 50/60Hz), so no external power brick is needed. Still, leave some space around it so heat can escape.
Desktop or rack
The unit measures about 10.5 x 6.4 x 1.7 inches and weighs 2.9 lb (about 1.3 kg). It sits on a desk or shelf, and rackmount brackets are included for 1U rack installation, so it can also go in a network cabinet.
LED indicators
LEDs show power, link and activity. They help when tracing a faulty cable or an unplugged device: a lit link light generally means the port has an active connection.
Compliance and support
TRENDnet says the switch is NDAA and TAA compliant (U.S. and Canada only), which matters for some government purchasing. It also lists lifetime protection for the U.S. and Canada, and English-language technical support during business hours. Read the terms on TRENDnet's site before relying on them.
Who it suits
It suits home offices, small businesses, classrooms and workshops that need more wired ports, and people wiring up a home network with many devices. It does not offer management features such as VLANs or port monitoring, which larger networks sometimes need, and it does not provide Power over Ethernet.
What to check before you buy
- Cabling: use good-quality Cat5e or better cables for Gigabit speeds.
- Placement: pick a spot with airflow and a nearby outlet.
- Features: confirm you don't need PoE, VLANs or other management tools.
- Uplink speed: the link to your router is one Gigabit port, shared by all devices.
- Mounting: if you plan to use a rack, check the bracket fit.
- Region: the compliance and protection details are for the U.S. and Canada.
