The TRENDnet TEG-S24g is an unmanaged 24-port gigabit Ethernet switch in a metal rackmount case. It adds wired connections for computers, printers, servers and access points, and it needs no setup beyond plugging in cables. It has no fan, so it is silent, and a built-in power supply keeps the cabling tidy.
What an unmanaged gigabit switch does
A switch connects wired devices on one network and passes traffic between them. "Unmanaged" means there is no configuration screen: the switch learns which device is on which port and forwards data on its own. That suits offices, workshops and home labs that want more ports and have no need for VLANs or remote monitoring.
All 24 ports are RJ-45 and work at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps, so older and newer devices can share the switch. The ports negotiate speed automatically with whatever is plugged in.
Reading the speed figures
The listing gives a 48 Gbps switching capacity. That equals 24 ports at 1 Gbps in each direction at once (24 × 1 × 2). In general, a switch with that capacity can pass full-speed traffic on every port at the same time without becoming the bottleneck. The data rates are also listed in full-duplex terms: 200 Mbps for Fast Ethernet and 2000 Mbps for gigabit, counting both directions.
Individual transfers are still limited by the slowest link in the chain, including the cable, the other device and the uplink to the router. Jumbo frames up to 10 KB are supported, which can help some storage and large-file traffic when every device is configured for them.
GREENnet and the fanless design
TRENDnet says GREENnet technology adjusts power consumption automatically and can cut it by up to 70% (the brand's own figure, with a footnote in its description). The feature works without management. In general, such savings come from lowering power on ports with no link or on short cable runs.
The fanless design removes fan noise, which matters if the switch sits in an office or a quiet room. With no fan, airflow comes from the case itself, so leave space around the vents.
Rack mounting and what's in the box
The case is metal, and a rack mount kit is included. The package also contains a quick installation guide and a power cord. Diagnostic LEDs on the front help with troubleshooting, so you can see which ports have a link. The listing gives the weight as 5 lb (about 2.3 kg).
TRENDnet also states NDAA and TAA compliance for the U.S. and Canada, and lifetime protection in the same two countries.
Who it suits
It suits small offices, schools, workshops and home networks that have run out of ports on a router, or that run cables back to a central closet. It is also a straightforward choice for a rack that needs a plain, quiet switch. It is not meant for networks that need VLANs, link aggregation or traffic monitoring, and it does not supply power over Ethernet.
What to check before you buy
- Port count: 24 ports is a lot. Count your devices and leave room to grow.
- No PoE: the switch does not power devices through the cable. Cameras and access points need their own power or an injector.
- Uplink: the connection back to your router is shared by all devices, so a busy network may want a faster or additional uplink.
- Rack or shelf: confirm you have a 19-inch rack, or a flat, ventilated surface if you do not mount it.
- Management: if you need VLANs or remote monitoring, you will need a managed switch.
- Warranty region: the lifetime protection applies in the U.S. and Canada, as TRENDnet states.
