The TRENDnet TEG-S16G is an unmanaged Ethernet switch with 16 Gigabit ports. It plugs in and works with no setup, and it comes with brackets for a standard 19-inch rack. This page explains what its specifications mean and who it is meant for.
What an unmanaged switch does
A switch connects wired devices on one network, such as computers, printers, network storage, cameras and access points, and passes traffic between them. An unmanaged switch has no settings to configure. You connect your router and your devices, and it learns where each device is. This is simple and reliable, but it offers no VLANs, port monitoring or traffic rules. For those you would need a managed switch.
Sixteen Gigabit ports
All 16 RJ-45 ports run at Gigabit speed. TRENDnet lists the switch as handling Ethernet at 10 and 100 Mbps for older devices, too. Its 32 Gbps switching capacity is the total the switch can process across ports, which in general is enough for all 16 ports to pass traffic at full rate without a bottleneck. Real-world speed is also limited by your cables, your devices and the connection to your router or internet service.
Fanless and quiet
The switch has no fan, so it makes no operating noise. TRENDnet says this suits quiet environments. A fanless metal case relies on airflow around it, so leave space and avoid stacking hot equipment against it.
GREENnet power saving
TRENDnet says its GREENnet technology adjusts power use automatically, limiting port power during periods of low link usage, and that it reduces power consumption by up to 70%. The company's figure comes from its own testing conditions, so actual savings depend on how many ports are in use.
Rack or shelf
The metal housing and included rackmount hardware suit 19-inch, 1U racks. The power supply is built in, which means a standard power cord (1.8 m / 6 ft) rather than an external adapter, with less clutter. Diagnostic LEDs help with checking links and troubleshooting. The package contains the switch, a quick installation guide, the power cord and the rackmount hardware.
Compliance and support
TRENDnet lists the switch as NDAA and TAA compliant for U.S. and Canada customers, which matters for some government purchasing rules. It also lists Lifetime Manufacturer Protection (U.S. and Canada only) and English-language technical support during business hours.
Who it suits
It suits small offices, home labs and workshops that need more wired ports with no configuration. It also suits a network cabinet where a quiet, rack-mountable unit is helpful.
What to check before you buy
- Port count: plan for future devices so you aren't short of ports.
- Power over Ethernet: the listing doesn't mention PoE, so devices such as cameras or access points need their own power.
- Cabling: use quality Cat5e or better cable for Gigabit.
- Placement: rack, shelf or desk, with space for airflow.
- Management needs: choose a managed switch if you need VLANs or monitoring.
- Warranty terms: read the conditions for your region.
