The TP-Link TL-SX3008F is an eight-port 10 gigabit switch from the company's JetStream line. All eight ports are SFP+, and the switch is "L2+ smart managed", which means it offers more control than a plain unmanaged switch. It's meant for network links where speed between servers, storage and other switches matters.
What SFP+ ports are
SFP+ is a slot standard that takes a small module or a direct-attach cable, instead of a built-in copper RJ45 socket. The module decides the medium: fibre, or in some cases copper. This makes SFP+ switches flexible, because you pick the module for the distance and cabling you have. It also means the switch doesn't include modules or cables in its listing, so you need to buy what fits. TP-Link lists eight 10 Gbps SFP+ ports with non-blocking switching capacity, which in general means the switch can pass traffic on every port at full speed at once.
What L2+ managed means
A Layer 2 switch forwards traffic by MAC address. TP-Link's "L2+" adds some Layer 3 features, including static routing, so traffic can move between VLANs on the switch itself. The listing also names IPv6 support and L2/L3/L4 QoS, which lets you prioritise certain traffic, plus IGMP and LAG. IGMP helps manage multicast traffic, while link aggregation (LAG) joins several ports into one logical link for more bandwidth or redundancy.
Omada SDN and cloud management
The switch is integrated with TP-Link's Omada SDN platform, which manages switches, access points and gateways from one interface. TP-Link lists several control options: a hardware controller, a software controller or a cloud-based controller (contact TP-Link for the cloud plan details). Standalone mode also works. Remote cloud access and the Omada app support management of several sites from one place.
TP-Link adds one compatibility note: for SDN use, your devices and controllers need to be SDN-capable or upgradable. SDN controllers work only with SDN switches, access points and gateways, and non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN access points.
Security features
The listing names 802.1Q VLAN, IP-MAC-Port binding, ACL, port security, DoS defence, storm control, DHCP snooping and 802.1X RADIUS authentication, among others. These tools let an administrator separate groups of devices, limit which devices can connect, and reduce the effect of faulty or malicious traffic. They need to be configured; they don't act by default.
Size and mounting
It measures 17.3 x 7.1 x 1.7 inches and weighs 3.6 lb (about 1.6 kg). The 17.3-inch width matches a standard 19-inch rack's footprint at one rack unit high. TP-Link provides a 5-year manufacturer warranty.
Who it suits
It suits home labs, small offices and server rooms that need fast links between a few devices: a NAS, virtualisation hosts, a workstation and an uplink. People who want Omada's single-interface management for a mixed network will find the integration relevant.
What to check before you buy
- Modules and cables: SFP+ transceivers or direct-attach cables aren't part of the switch; match them to your devices and distances.
- Device ports: many computers and NAS units use RJ45 copper, not SFP+, so check how you will connect them.
- Controller plans: if you want Omada, check SDN compatibility of your other gear.
- Mounting space: check the rack or shelf, ventilation and the noise level you're comfortable with.
- Features you need: confirm the VLAN, routing and QoS options match your plans.
The short version
- Eight 10 Gbps SFP+ ports with non-blocking switching capacity.
- L2+ smart managed, with static routing, QoS, IGMP, LAG and IPv6.
- Omada SDN integration, with hardware, software or cloud control, or standalone use.
- VLAN, ACL, port security, DHCP snooping and 802.1X security features.
- Five-year manufacturer warranty; SFP+ modules are bought separately.
