The TP-Link TL-SG2428P is a rack-mountable Gigabit network switch with 24 PoE+ ports and four SFP slots. It is aimed at small and medium offices, shops, schools and larger homes that need to connect many wired devices and power some of them over the same cable, such as access points, IP cameras and VoIP phones.
What Power over Ethernet adds
PoE sends electrical power along an Ethernet cable, so a device needs just one cable for data and power. The switch's 24 RJ45 ports support PoE+ (802.3at) and the older 802.3af standard, with up to 30W per port. TP-Link lists a total PoE power capacity of 250W. That is the limit for all ports together, so powering 24 devices at full draw is not possible. Most access points and cameras use far less than 30W, so the capacity often stretches further than it first appears.
Ports and uplinks
Each of the 24 copper ports runs 10/100/1000 Mbps. The four Gigabit SFP slots take fibre or copper modules sold separately, which is useful for linking to another switch over a longer distance or for isolating a building. Modules should match the speed and type your link needs.
Smart managed features
"Smart managed" means you can configure the switch through a web interface, with more control than an unmanaged switch gives. TP-Link lists:
- VLANs (802.1Q): split one switch into separate logical networks.
- QoS (L2/L3/L4): prioritise traffic such as voice or video.
- IGMP snooping, link aggregation, flow control: manage multicast traffic and combine links.
- Security: IP-MAC-port binding, ACL, port security, DoS defence, storm control, DHCP snooping and 802.1X RADIUS authentication.
The listing also mentions PoE recovery, IPv6 and static routing.
Omada SDN and cloud access
The switch integrates with TP-Link's Omada SDN platform, which manages switches, access points and gateways from one place, using a hardware controller or a software controller. Standalone mode also works. Cloud access and the Omada app allow remote management of several sites. TP-Link notes that SDN controllers work only with SDN-capable devices, so check that your other equipment is compatible or can be upgraded.
Size and support
The unit measures about 17.3 x 8.7 x 1.7 inches (44 x 22 x 4.3 cm) and weighs 7.1 lb (about 3.2 kg), a standard 19-inch rack width at 1U height. TP-Link lists a 5-year warranty and technical support from 6am to 6pm PST on weekdays.
Who it suits
It suits small businesses with a mix of PoE devices, installers building camera or Wi-Fi networks, and people who want a managed core switch they can grow later with Omada gear.
What to check before you buy
- PoE capacity: add up the wattage of the devices you plan to power and compare with 250W.
- Mounting: check you have a rack or shelf, and room for airflow and the fan noise noted in the manual.
- SFP modules: buy modules separately and match them to your link.
- Controller compatibility: confirm your Omada hardware supports SDN mode.
- Cabling: use suitable Ethernet cable for PoE and follow local electrical codes and the manual.
- Setup skills: VLANs and QoS are powerful, but they take planning.
