The TP-Link TL-SG2008 V3 is an eight-port gigabit "smart managed" switch. It sits between an unmanaged switch, which simply passes traffic, and a full enterprise switch, giving you control over VLANs, traffic priority and security without a large chassis. It suits small offices, home labs and networks that need to be organised rather than just extended.

Eight gigabit ports

All eight ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45, so each connection can run at gigabit speed over ordinary Ethernet cable. The switch measures about 8.2 x 5.0 x 1.0 inches and weighs 1.3 lb, which makes it a compact desktop or shelf unit. Because it is a switch rather than a router, it needs a router or gateway upstream to provide internet access and addresses.

What "smart managed" and Omada SDN mean

A smart managed switch lets you configure features through a web interface. TP-Link says the TL-SG2008 integrates into its Omada Software Defined Networking platform, where switches, access points and gateways can be managed together. You can use an Omada hardware controller or the software controller, or run the switch in standalone mode. TP-Link also describes remote cloud access and an Omada app for managing sites from one interface. The listing notes that SDN controllers work only with SDN-capable access points, switches and gateways, so confirm your other devices before building around it.

Powering it: PoE-in or a DC adapter

The switch can run from a 12V/1A DC supply or from 802.3at/af PoE on port 8. The second option means it can be powered over the network cable from a PoE source, which is handy where there is no outlet nearby. Note that this is PoE input: the listing does not describe it as supplying PoE to other devices.

VLANs, QoS and security

The security list includes 802.1Q VLAN, IP-MAC-Port binding, ACLs, port security, DoS defence, storm control, DHCP snooping and 802.1X RADIUS authentication. In general terms:

  • VLANs split one physical switch into separate logical networks, for example keeping guest devices apart from office computers.
  • QoS (L2/L3/L4) lets you prioritise traffic such as voice or video so it stays smooth when the network is busy.
  • IGMP snooping limits multicast traffic, such as some streaming, to the ports that need it.
  • Link aggregation combines ports for more bandwidth or redundancy to another device.

The listing also mentions IPv6 static routing in its title.

Warranty and support

TP-Link states a five-year warranty and free technical support from 6am to 6pm Pacific time, Monday to Friday.

Who it suits

It suits home labs, small businesses and anyone who needs VLANs or traffic prioritisation on a handful of devices. It is more than a basic home network needs if you only want extra ports.

What to check before you buy

  • Port count and speed: eight gigabit ports; check whether you need more ports or faster uplinks.
  • Controller plans: confirm the rest of your Omada gear is SDN-compatible if you want central management.
  • Power source: decide whether you will use the DC adapter or PoE on port 8, and confirm what is in the box.
  • Configuration skill: managed features need some setup; read the manual first.
  • Mounting: check the dimensions against the shelf or rack you have in mind.

The short version

  • An 8-port gigabit smart managed switch from TP-Link.
  • Works with the Omada SDN platform or in standalone mode.
  • Powered by a 12V/1A adapter or by 802.3at/af PoE on port 8.
  • VLAN, QoS, IGMP snooping, link aggregation and a range of security features.
  • A five-year warranty, as stated by TP-Link.
