TP-Link TL-SG1024DE 24-Port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch: specs and uses

The TP-Link TL-SG1024DE is a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch from the company's Easy Smart range. It sits between a basic unmanaged switch and a full enterprise managed one: it plugs in and works straight away, but it also offers a set of management features for people who want to organise their network traffic.

What "Easy Smart" means

A plain unmanaged switch simply passes traffic along. An Easy Smart switch adds a configuration layer, set up through a utility that runs on Microsoft Windows according to the listing, so you can turn on features such as VLANs and QoS without needing the command-line tools of a larger managed switch. If you never change a setting, the switch still operates as a plug-and-play device.

Ports and speed

All 24 ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX. Auto-negotiation means each port settles on the fastest speed the connected device supports, and auto MDI/MDIX means you do not need a special crossover cable. TP-Link says the shielded ports and sturdy metal case are part of the design.

The switch supports 9K jumbo frames. Standard Ethernet frames carry about 1,500 bytes of data; jumbo frames carry more per packet, which can reduce overhead during large transfers, such as backups to a network storage device. Jumbo frames only help if every device on the path is set up for them.

VLANs, QoS and IGMP

  • VLANs (802.1Q): these split one physical switch into separate logical networks. TP-Link says this segments traffic and improves network security, for example by keeping guest or camera devices apart from computers.
  • QoS (802.1p, port and tag based): this gives priority to latency-sensitive traffic such as voice calls so it is not delayed by bulk downloads.
  • IGMP snooping: it limits multicast traffic, used by some streaming and conferencing applications, to the ports that asked for it instead of flooding every port.
  • Link aggregation (LAG): this combines several ports into one logical link for more bandwidth or redundancy to a server or another switch.

Monitoring tools

TP-Link lists port mirroring, loop prevention and cable diagnostics. Port mirroring copies traffic from one port to another so a computer can inspect it, loop prevention helps avoid a cable mistake bringing down the network, and cable diagnostics can help locate a faulty run.

Size and mounting

The switch measures about 11.6 x 7.1 x 1.7 inches (29.5 x 18 x 4.3 cm) and weighs 3.7 lb (about 1.7 kg). The listing describes it as a desktop or rackmount unit, which fits the usual 1U height. TP-Link backs it with a three-year warranty and technical support during weekday hours, Pacific time.

Who it suits

It suits home labs, small offices and workshops with many wired devices, and anyone who wants VLANs or QoS without paying attention to a large management system. A home with only a few wired devices will not need 24 ports.

What to check before you buy

  • Management software: the listing names a Windows utility, so confirm it works with the computers you have.
  • Port count: count your wired devices and leave room to grow.
  • Rack or desk: check the mounting hardware and the space for cables and airflow.
  • Power over Ethernet: the listing does not describe PoE supply, so check this if you need to power access points or cameras through the switch.
  • Features you will really use: VLANs, QoS and LAG all need planning on the other devices too.

The short version

  • A 24-port 10/100/1000 Mbps Easy Smart switch, model TL-SG1024DE.
  • Supports 802.1Q VLANs, port and tag based QoS, IGMP snooping, LAG and 9K jumbo frames.
  • Port mirroring, loop prevention and cable diagnostics for monitoring.
  • Metal case, desktop or rackmount, three-year warranty.
