The TP-Link Festa F54 is a ceiling-mount wireless access point that adds Wi-Fi 5 coverage to a small business or large home. It connects to your network by cable and is managed from the Festa app or web, with no software to install on a server.
What an access point does
An access point adds wireless coverage to a wired network. It is not a router, so it needs a router or switch behind it. Several access points can cover a bigger area than one router, which is why they are common in offices, shops and larger homes.
Speed and Wi-Fi 5
The F54 is an AC1750 dual-band device using 802.11ac Wave 2 (Wi-Fi 5). TP-Link lists speeds up to 1750 Mbps in total: 1300 Mbps on the 5GHz band and 450 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. These are combined theoretical maxima, and real speeds depend on devices, distance and walls.
MU-MIMO lets the access point talk to multiple devices at the same time instead of one after another, which TP-Link says gives reliable speeds to many devices simultaneously.
Mesh, roaming and wireless features
TP-Link lists several features:
- Mesh Wi-Fi and seamless roaming: several units can work together so devices move between them without a manual reconnection.
- Band steering: nudges capable devices to the 5GHz band.
- Load balancing and airtime fairness: spread clients across the access point and share airtime so slower devices don't hold others back.
- Beamforming: focuses the signal toward devices.
The description also mentions WPA/WPA2 encryption for security.
Cloud management
Remote cloud management runs through the Festa app or web interface, from a single interface that TP-Link says is available anywhere, anytime. Zero-Touch Provisioning is listed too, meaning units can pick up their configuration automatically when connected. The listing includes a notice that the access point does not work with Omada, TP-Link's other management system, so it should be managed with Festa.
Powering it
The F54 supports 802.3af PoE and 48V passive PoE. You can power it from a PoE switch, or with the included passive PoE adapter, which avoids running a separate power cable to the ceiling. It has two Gigabit Ethernet ports.
Who it suits
It suits small offices, shops, cafés and larger homes wanting ceiling-mounted coverage with simple cloud management. If you want the newest Wi-Fi standard, note that this is Wi-Fi 5.
What to check before you buy
- Wi-Fi generation: it's Wi-Fi 5, so devices that support Wi-Fi 6 will connect at Wi-Fi 5 speeds.
- Management system: it works with Festa, not Omada.
- Cabling: you need an Ethernet run to the mounting spot, and a PoE switch or the supplied adapter.
- Coverage: plan the number and position of units for your building.
- Mounting: check the manual for ceiling or wall mounting hardware and surfaces.
