The TP-Link EAP650-Outdoor is a Wi-Fi 6 access point built to be mounted outside as well as indoors. It uses a weatherproof IP67 enclosure and draws its power from the network cable, so it can cover a yard, a car park, a campus walkway or a large room without a nearby power outlet. It is part of TP-Link's Omada system for managing many access points together.
What AX3000 and Wi-Fi 6 mean
AX3000 is a combined, theoretical figure for the two radio bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz). TP-Link lists speeds of up to 2976 Mbps across the dual bands. Real speeds depend on the device, distance, walls and interference, and one device never gets the combined figure. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) mainly improves how an access point serves many devices at once. TP-Link lists 1024-QAM, MU-MIMO and Long OFDM Symbol among the technologies involved. In general, Wi-Fi 6 helps most where many phones, laptops and sensors share the same access point.
Built for the outdoors
The IP67 classification describes dust-tight construction that also withstands temporary immersion in water, which is why it is used for outdoor installs. TP-Link also describes dedicated high-gain antennas and says the discreet look suits indoor spaces as well. Check the manual for the listed operating temperature range and for mounting hardware, since installation location and height affect coverage.
Power over Ethernet
The unit is PoE+ powered. One Ethernet cable carries both data and power from a compatible PoE+ switch or injector, so you don't need a power point at the mounting location. The access point doesn't ship with its own power adapter in the listing, so check the box contents and make sure your switch or injector supports PoE+ (802.3at).
Omada SDN management
Omada is TP-Link's software-defined networking platform. It brings access points, switches and gateways into one interface. TP-Link lists three ways to control it: a hardware controller, a software controller, or a cloud-based controller (contact TP-Link for cloud plan details). Standalone mode also works for a single unit. TP-Link adds that mesh and seamless roaming require an Omada SDN controller.
Other listed wireless features include band steering, load balancing, airtime fairness and beamforming, which steer devices to a suitable band, spread clients across radios, and focus signal toward connected devices.
Size and weight
It measures about 11.0 x 4.2 x 2.2 inches and weighs 1.8 lb (around 0.8 kg), so it is slim enough for pole or wall mounting.
Who it suits
It suits small businesses, schools, campgrounds, workshops and homes with large grounds that already run structured cabling, or are willing to install it. It fits especially well for people who want one management view across several sites. For a single room in an apartment, a simpler home router may be enough.
What to check before you buy
- Power: confirm you have a PoE+ switch or injector, and a cable run within Ethernet distance limits.
- Controller choice: decide between a hardware, software or cloud Omada controller, and confirm any features you need work in standalone mode.
- Mounting: check the location, height and the mounting hardware in the box.
- Coverage plan: walls, trees and distance affect range, so plan how many units you need.
- Client devices: older devices won't use Wi-Fi 6 speeds.
- Local rules: check regulations on outdoor wireless equipment where you live.
The short version
- A dual-band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 access point for indoor or outdoor use.
- IP67 weatherproof enclosure with high-gain antennas.
- Powered over Ethernet (PoE+), so only one cable is needed.
- Works with Omada SDN controllers or in standalone mode; mesh and seamless roaming need a controller.
- About 1.8 lb, 11.0 inches long.
