TP-Link EAP610 Omada AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point: specs and who it suits

The TP-Link EAP610 is a ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 6 access point with dual-band AX1800 speeds, PoE+ power, mesh support and Omada cloud management. What the specs mean.

The TP-Link EAP610 is a ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 6 access point built for offices, classrooms, cafés and hotels, though it is just as usable in a larger home. Unlike a consumer router, an access point only provides wireless coverage and is connected to a network by cable, which makes it easy to place wherever coverage is needed. Here is what its specs mean.

Wi-Fi 6 and AX1800 speeds

The EAP610 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) device. TP-Link rates it at up to 1800Mbps combined across both bands, using 1024-QAM and a longer OFDM symbol, and it has four spatial streams. The 1800 figure is a total of the two bands' theoretical maximums, so no single device will see it. What Wi-Fi 6 mainly improves is how well the access point handles many devices at once.

Two features support that. OFDMA divides a channel so several devices can be served in the same transmission, and MU-MIMO lets the access point talk to several devices simultaneously. TP-Link also lists band steering, load balancing, airtime fairness and beamforming, which are techniques for spreading clients across bands and focusing the signal. WPA3 is supported for security.

Omada management

The access point is part of TP-Link's Omada SDN platform, which manages access points, switches and gateways from one interface. You can control it through a hardware controller, a software controller or a cloud-based controller, and it also works in standalone mode. TP-Link says cloud management needs no separate hardware or software controller: you open the Omada app and scan the serial number on the package. Remote access lets a manager look after several sites from one place.

TP-Link notes that seamless roaming over mesh needs an Omada SDN controller. Roaming means a phone or laptop moves between access points without dropping a call.

Power options

Power can come three ways:

  • 802.3at PoE+ from a compatible switch.
  • 48V/0.5A passive PoE, using an adapter such as the TL-PoE4824G that TP-Link suggests.
  • The supplied 12V/1.5A DC adapter.

Power over Ethernet means a single cable carries both data and power, which suits ceiling installations where there is no outlet.

Design and mesh

The unit is slim and white, about 6.3 x 6.3 x 1.3 inches (16 x 16 x 3.3 cm) and 0.9 lb (about 0.4 kg). It supports mesh Wi-Fi, where access points link wirelessly to extend coverage where cabling is hard.

Warranty and support

TP-Link states a five-year warranty and technical support during set hours, 6am to 6pm Pacific time on weekdays.

Who it suits

It suits small businesses, schools, cafés and homes that want planned, cabled Wi-Fi coverage with central management. It is less suited to someone who wants a single plug-in device that also acts as a router.

What to check before you buy

  • Switch or power: decide whether you will power it with a PoE+ switch, a passive injector or the included adapter.
  • Gigabit port: the product is called a gigabit access point, so confirm your cabling and switch ports match.
  • Controller choice: decide between cloud, software or hardware control, and check TP-Link's compatibility notes for your equipment.
  • Roaming and mesh: check the Omada requirements for seamless roaming.
  • Placement: think about ceiling or wall mounting and what mounting hardware is in the box.
  • Coverage: consider the size and layout of your space, and how many access points it needs.

The short version

  • A ceiling-mount, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 access point rated at AX1800.
  • Supports OFDMA, MU-MIMO, mesh, WPA3 and band steering.
  • Omada SDN integration with cloud, software, hardware or standalone control.
  • Powered by 802.3at PoE+, 48V passive PoE or a 12V DC adapter.
  • Five-year warranty.
