The StarTech RK12WALLOA is a 12U wall-mount rack with an open, two-post frame and a depth you can adjust. It gives network switches, patch panels, audio-visual equipment and other 19-inch gear a tidy home on the wall, off the floor and within easy reach.
Rack units and the 19-inch standard
A rack unit (U) is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) of vertical space, so 12U provides about 21 inches of mounting height. Equipment designed for 19-inch racks fits the standard width, and StarTech lists the rack as EIA/ECA-310 compliant, the specification for that hole pattern and width. A two-post design supports gear from its front or middle rails, so it suits lighter equipment like switches, patch panels, PDUs and shelves more than very deep servers.
Adjustable depth
The depth adjusts from 12 to 20 inches (30.5 to 50.8 cm). At 12 inches the rack is compact enough for tight spaces. At 20 inches, StarTech says it can accommodate larger data, network and telecommunications devices and shelves. This makes it a flexible choice if your equipment changes over time. Check each device's depth, including cable room at the back.
Build and weight capacity
The vertical rails are SPCC cold-rolled steel, a common sheet steel for racks. StarTech states a weight capacity of up to 200lb (90kg). The open frame supports unobstructed airflow and gives access from all sides, which StarTech says helps keep equipment cool and easy to reach. The rack itself weighs about 32.2lb (14.6kg).
Flat-pack and assembly
The rack ships flat-packed in ISTA-6 certified packaging, and assembly is required. Instructions are included. Allow time to put the frame together before mounting it. Wall-mounting holes are spaced 12 and 16 inches apart, which StarTech says suits North American wall-frame stud spacing, so it can be fixed to many walls. Use fixings suited to your wall type and follow the manual, since a loaded rack puts real weight on the wall.
Included hardware
A set of M6 square cage nuts, M6 screws and plastic washers is included, so you can mount equipment without hunting for hardware.
Support
StarTech says the rack has a five-year warranty and free lifetime 24/5 multilingual technical assistance.
Who it suits
It suits home labs, small offices, AV closets and server rooms where floor space is limited, and anyone whose equipment might grow deeper over time.
What to check before you buy
- Equipment depth: pick the depth setting after measuring your deepest device and cables.
- Load: the 200lb limit includes everything you mount, so add up the weight.
- Wall and studs: find studs 12 or 16 inches apart, or use suitable anchors for masonry.
- Height: total the U height of your devices and leave spare units.
- Assembly: it arrives flat-packed, so allow time and basic tools.
- Open design: there are no doors or locks, so consider dust and who can reach it.
