The Soundcore Q20i (model A3004) is a pair of wireless over-ear headphones with hybrid active noise cancelling. Soundcore, Anker's audio brand, designed them for commuting, travel and working in noisy spaces, with a long battery life and a companion app for sound tweaks.

How hybrid noise cancelling works

Active noise cancelling uses microphones to pick up outside sound and then plays an opposite signal to reduce it. "Hybrid" means microphones both outside and inside the ear cups. The Q20i has two external and two internal mics, which Soundcore says reduce up to 90% of noise, such as aircraft and car engines. As a rule, ANC works best on steady, low-pitched sounds and less well on sudden noises or voices.

Transparency mode

Transparency mode does the opposite: it lets outside sound in through the microphones so you can hear announcements or traffic without taking the headphones off. The app switches among three modes: ANC, Normal and Transparency. It also includes a white noise feature.

Sound

The headphones use 40mm dynamic drivers and BassUp technology for stronger low frequencies. Soundcore says they are compatible with Hi-Res certified audio through the AUX cable. A wired connection also helps in situations where Bluetooth is not allowed or when you want to avoid wireless delay. The app has 22 EQ presets plus a custom equaliser, which can reshape bass-heavy sound to taste.

Battery life and charging

Soundcore rates the battery at 40 hours with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode. A fast charge of five minutes is said to give an extra four hours of playback. These figures depend on volume level and use, but a 40-hour figure means several days of commuting between charges.

Dual connections

The headphones use Bluetooth 5.0 and can connect to two devices at once, such as a laptop and a phone. Audio plays from whichever device is active, so a call can come through while you work. Multipoint setups usually need both devices to be paired first.

Size and weight

The Q20i measures about 6.9 x 7.3 x 3.1 inches and weighs roughly 0.5 lb (about 227 g). Light over-ear headphones tend to be easier to wear over long periods, though comfort depends on head shape and clamping force.

Who they suit

They suit commuters, frequent travellers, students and remote workers who want to cut background noise and need long battery life. People who need studio-accurate sound or the strongest possible cancelling may look at other categories of product.

What to check before you buy

  • Fit and comfort: consider your head size, glasses and how long you wear headphones.
  • Wired use: check that you have the AUX cable and what is in the box.
  • Phone compatibility: confirm that your devices support the app and Bluetooth 5.0.
  • Calls: ANC and call microphone quality are separate; check the specs if calls matter.
  • Upkeep: check the manual for ear-cushion care.
