The Philips H6509 is an over-ear wireless headphone from the Philips 6000 series. It combines adaptive noise cancelling, Bluetooth 5.3 and a battery that Philips rates at up to 70 hours. It is meant for commuting, travel, work and general listening.

Noise cancelling and Awareness Mode

Philips calls the system Noise Canceling Pro. Adaptive noise cancelling uses microphones to measure outside sound and counter it in real time, and Philips says that includes wind. Awareness Mode lets outside sound in when you want to hear announcements or traffic. You choose the mode in the Philips app. In general, noise cancelling works best on steady, low sounds such as engine hum and less on sudden noises.

Sound

The headphones use 40 mm drivers. Philips says they deliver detailed sound with strong bass, and the app has a Dynamic Bass option and sound styles. A dedicated microphone with noise reduction is there to keep your voice clear on calls.

Battery and charging

Philips rates playtime at up to 70 hours with ANC off, so with noise cancelling on, expect less. A quick 5-minute charge gives an extra 3 hours, according to Philips. Charging is by USB-C, so one cable can serve the headphones and a phone or tablet.

Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint

Bluetooth 5.3 is the connection standard. Multipoint lets the headphones stay connected to two devices at once, for instance a laptop playing video and a phone that receives notifications. Philips also says a low-latency mode, activated with the power button, reduces audio delay for videos and games.

Controls and app

A multi-function button handles calls and playback. The Philips app adds the bass setting, a timer for automatic power-off and sound styles.

Comfort and portability

Memory foam cushions are meant for long listening sessions. The ear cups fold and swivel inward so the headphones pack flat into a bag or pocket. They weigh about 0.6 lb (roughly 270 g) and measure 2.3 x 7.5 x 8.3 inches (about 6 x 19 x 21 cm).

Who it suits

They suit people who travel or commute and want a long battery life and noise cancelling, and people who switch between a phone and a laptop.

What to check before you buy

  • Fit and comfort: over-ear cups and memory foam suit most heads, but fit varies, especially with glasses.
  • Compatibility: confirm your devices support Bluetooth and, for multipoint, check the manual for pairing steps.
  • Charging: you need a USB-C cable.
  • Battery expectations: the 70 hours figure is with ANC off.
  • App: some features, such as Dynamic Bass and the timer, are in the app.
  • What's in the box: check the contents list for a cable and case.
