The Soundcore Life Q30 (model A3028) is a pair of over-ear Bluetooth headphones with hybrid active noise cancelling and three selectable noise modes. It is made for commuting, flying and concentrating in noisy rooms. Here is what its main features mean.

Hybrid noise cancelling

Active noise cancelling (ANC) uses microphones to pick up ambient sound and produces an opposing signal that reduces it. Soundcore says the Life Q30 uses dual noise-detecting microphones and filters out up to 95% of low-frequency ambient sound. In general, ANC is most effective on steady, low-pitched noise such as engine hum, and less so on voices or sudden sounds.

Three noise modes

You can switch between three modes in the Soundcore app. Transport is tuned for aeroplane engine noise, Outdoor for traffic and wind, and Indoor for the sound of a busy office with people talking in the background. Matching the mode to your surroundings usually gives a cleaner result than a single setting. Soundcore notes that ANC doesn't work when you use an AUX cable connection.

Drivers and sound

The headphones have 40 mm drivers with silk diaphragms. Soundcore says they reproduce strong bass and treble extending up to 40 kHz, and describes the sound as Hi-Res. The listing also mentions custom EQ through the app, so you can adjust the sound to your taste.

Battery life

Soundcore lists up to 40 hours of playtime with noise cancelling on and up to 60 hours in standard mode. A 5-minute charge is said to give 4 hours of listening. As with all battery figures, real use at higher volumes will be shorter.

Multipoint connection

Multipoint Bluetooth means the headphones can stay connected to two devices at once, such as a laptop and a phone, and switch between them when a call comes in. That is useful for working from home or in an office.

Comfort

The earcups use protein leather over memory foam, and Soundcore calls the build lightweight. At about 0.6 lb (roughly 270 g), the weight is typical for an over-ear pair. The size of the headphones is listed as 7.7 x 7.1 x 3.1 inches (about 19.6 x 18 x 7.9 cm).

Who they suit

They suit commuters, frequent flyers, students and remote workers who want an over-ear pair with selectable noise cancelling and the ability to link two devices.

What to check before you buy

  • Fit and pressure: over-ear headphones can feel warm during long sessions, so check the size and clamp suit you.
  • Wired use: ANC isn't available when the AUX cable is connected.
  • Devices: confirm your phone and laptop support Bluetooth, and check how multipoint pairing works in the manual.
  • App support: check that the Soundcore app works with your phone for the modes and EQ.
  • What's in the box: check the listing or manual for cables and a case.
