The Reolink RLK8-800B4 is a wired security camera kit built around an 8-port PoE network recorder with a 2TB hard drive. It uses 4K bullet cameras that connect by network cable, and it records locally. This page explains the specs and the points worth confirming before choosing a system like this.
What 4K (8MP) video gives you
The cameras record at 4K Ultra HD, 8MP or 3840 x 2160. That is almost four times the pixel count of 1080p, and Reolink says it keeps video clear even when digitally zoomed in. For a driveway or a wide yard, the extra pixels mean that a person or a number plate is more likely to be legible once you zoom into a recording.
Plug-and-play PoE
PoE (Power over Ethernet) sends power and video over a single network cable. That means no power outlet at each camera, and wiring is much simpler. Reolink describes it as suited to DIY enthusiasts and first-time users. Still, you do need to run cable from each camera to the recorder, so planning the routes is the bulk of the work.
Continuous recording and remote access
The recorder has a pre-installed 2TB drive for round-the-clock recording. Reolink says it can be expanded to 16TB (8TB + 8TB). You can see live video or play back recordings from the free Reolink app on iOS or Android, and the recordings are stored locally and sent securely, according to Reolink.
Smart detection
Motion detection sorts events into people, vehicles and animals, including pets. Reolink says this minimises false alerts from leaves, shadows or insects, so notifications are reserved for the events that matter. Detection quality in practice depends on camera placement and lighting.
Expanding the system
The recorder (hardware version N7MB01) has 8 PoE ports and supports up to 12 channels. You can add Reolink 4MP, 5MP, 8MP, 12MP and 16MP Wi-Fi and PoE cameras, including models such as the Duo 3 PoE and TrackMix PoE. Reolink adds that most of its battery cameras, including the Argus and Altas series, are supported but may need a firmware upgrade for full compatibility.
Warranty and support
Reolink states a 2-year warranty and technical support, and suggests updating camera and recorder firmware if there are problems.
Who it suits
It suits home or small-property owners who want continuous, local recording and are ready to run network cable. It also suits people who plan to grow a system over time.
What to check before you buy
- Cable runs: plan routes from the recorder to each camera location.
- Camera count: check how many cameras are in the kit and how many ports you will need.
- Recorder placement: it weighs 14.0 lb (about 6.4 kg) in its box, so it needs a sheltered spot near your network.
- Storage: decide how long you want to keep footage, and check how much a larger drive adds.
- Rules: check local rules on cameras that look at shared or public spaces, and follow the manual.
