The eMACROS Pro 3 (model HS002W) is a wireless driveway alarm made of an outdoor, solar-powered motion sensor and an indoor receiver. When the sensor detects movement, the receiver sounds and a phone app sends a notification. It is aimed at people with a long driveway, a gate or an outbuilding who want to know when someone approaches.
How the sensor and receiver work together
The system has two parts. The weatherproof sensor goes outdoors, at the edge of the area you want to watch. The receiver plugs in inside the house. When the sensor picks up motion, it sends a signal to the receiver, which alerts you. eMACROS rates the detection distance at about 30 feet (roughly 9 metres) from the sensor.
What a 1/2-mile range means in practice
The brand quotes a range of up to 1,500 feet (about 450 metres) between the sensor and the receiver, which is the "1/2 mile" in the product name. Figures like this are normally measured in open space. Trees, walls, hills and metal buildings typically reduce the real distance. eMACROS says the signal can penetrate obstacles well enough for the sensor to work from a basement, garage or shed, but the range you get will depend on your own layout.
Solar power and the built-in battery
The sensor has a solar panel and a rechargeable battery, so it does not need wiring or regular battery changes. In general, solar-charged sensors do best when the panel gets daylight for part of the day; a spot in deep shade may charge slowly. The receiver and the sensor can also be powered by USB-C. The listing notes that only a data cable is supplied, so you need your own 5V 1A USB adapter.
App alerts and Wi-Fi setup
Beyond the receiver's alert, the system sends push notifications through the My Hosmart app when motion is detected. Setup uses Bluetooth to connect the receiver to your Wi-Fi, followed by the steps in the manual. One detail matters: the listing says the product works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only and does not support 5GHz networks. Many routers broadcast both bands, but some phones join the 5GHz one by default during setup, which can cause a failed pairing.
Motion sensors and false alerts
Passive infrared sensors like this one react to moving heat sources, so alerts can come from vehicles, people, animals and sometimes wind-blown branches. Aiming the sensor along the path you care about, away from busy roads and moving foliage, typically cuts down on unwanted notifications.
Who it suits
It suits rural properties, long driveways, farms, workshops and anyone who spends time in a garden, garage or backyard and wants an audible heads-up when someone arrives. It is a notification tool, not a full security system. eMACROS also lists a two-year warranty.
What to check before you buy
- Wi-Fi band: confirm that your router offers a 2.4GHz network.
- Distance and obstacles: measure the gap between where the sensor and receiver will sit, and allow for walls and terrain.
- Sunlight: choose a sensor position that gets some sun, or plan to power it by USB-C.
- USB adapter: have a 5V 1A adapter ready, since only a cable is included.
- Mounting spot: check the height and angle the manual recommends.
- Phone app: make sure your phone supports the My Hosmart app.
