The Reolink E1 Outdoor Pro is a 4K security camera that can pan, tilt and zoom, so one camera can cover a driveway, yard or garage that might otherwise need several fixed ones. It connects over Wi-Fi, runs on plug-in power, and recognises and follows people and vehicles. It's certified waterproof for indoor and outdoor use.

What PTZ means in practice

PTZ stands for pan, tilt and zoom. The E1 Outdoor Pro's lens pans 355° and tilts 50°, so it can sweep across a wide area from a single mounting point instead of covering one fixed view.

The zoom is 3x optical. Optical zoom uses the lens to magnify the scene, so detail is kept as you zoom in; digital zoom simply crops and enlarges the image, which loses detail. Combined with 4K resolution, that makes it easier to pick out something like a truck in the driveway, or to zoom out for maximum coverage.

Person and vehicle detection

The camera analyses shapes to recognise people and vehicles and can auto-track them, turning to follow as they move. You can set motion zones, to limit detection to the areas you care about, and schedules, to choose when it's active. When it detects a person or vehicle, it sends an alert straight away.

Detection that tells people and vehicles apart from other movement typically cuts down on false alerts from swaying branches, passing shadows or animals, compared with plain motion detection. Motion zones help further by leaving out a busy street or a neighbour's yard.

Night vision: colour and infrared

At night, the camera has two options. Built-in spotlights can light the scene for colour footage, switched on by motion or by hand. In infrared mode, night vision reaches up to 100 feet (about 30 metres).

Infrared footage is black and white but doesn't light the area visibly. Spotlights add colour detail, which can help with things like the colour of a car or clothing, but they do light up the area, which you may not want facing bedroom windows or a neighbour's house.

Wi-Fi 6, dual-band and recording

The E1 Outdoor Pro uses Wi-Fi 6 and works on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. In general, 2.4 GHz reaches farther and passes through walls better, while 5 GHz is faster over a shorter range. Being able to use either lets you pick what works at the mounting spot. Streaming 4K footage needs a steady connection, so it's worth testing the signal where the camera will go.

It records to a microSD card of up to 512 GB.

Installation and power

This is a plug-in camera, so it needs a power outlet within reach of where you mount it. It's certified waterproof and works indoors or out, but outdoors it must be mounted upside down for its waterproofing to work as intended, which typically means under an eave or another overhang. Reolink covers it with a two-year limited warranty.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners who want to cover a driveway, yard or garage with one camera that can move, zoom and follow people and vehicles, and who have power available near the mounting point.

What to check before you buy

  • Power: where the cable will run; an outlet used outdoors should be rated for outdoor use.
  • Mounting spot: outdoors it must hang upside down, so check you have a suitable surface.
  • Wi-Fi signal: test both bands where the camera will go.
  • Recording: check whether a microSD card is included and what capacity you need.
  • Privacy: aim the camera and set motion zones so it covers your own property, and check local rules on recording neighbours or public areas.

The short version

  • A 4K Wi-Fi security camera with 3x optical zoom, 355° pan and 50° tilt.
