The AOSU solar security camera (model C9E2CA11) is a battery-powered, Wi-Fi outdoor camera that can pan and tilt. A solar panel helps keep the battery charged, so the camera can be mounted where there is no wiring. It records in 3K (5MP) resolution and sends alerts to a phone app when it detects people or vehicles.

Pan, tilt and one-tap view

The camera covers a 360° panorama, and AOSU describes a one-tap quick view that scans the surroundings from the app. A moving lens can cover an area that would otherwise need several fixed cameras. It also has auto tracking, which follows a person who moves through the scene.

What 3K and 5MP mean

3K, or 5 megapixels, is higher than standard 1080p. More pixels typically give more detail when you zoom into a recording, for example on a face or a number plate. Higher resolution also means larger files and more demand on the Wi-Fi connection.

Smart alerts and zones

AOSU says the camera detects humans and vehicles, and sends notifications with a picture. Telling people from passing leaves, insects or animals generally reduces needless alerts. The camera also offers a customisable intrusion zone and schedule, so you can limit alerts to a driveway or to certain hours.

Night vision, lights and sirens

At night the camera switches automatically between infrared and full-colour night vision, using its spotlights for colour. It also has sound and light alarms, a voice changer and quick voice replies, which let you answer a visitor with a preset message.

Two-way audio

The camera has two-way audio with noise reduction, so you can listen and talk through the app. AOSU says conversations are clear and free of echo.

Setup, storage and smart home

Setup uses Bluetooth to connect the camera to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. It does not use 5GHz, so check your router. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and access can be shared with family members. Footage can be kept on a local micro SD card (not included) or in cloud storage, which is a subscription service.

The build is described as waterproof and heat-resistant. A solar-assisted camera depends on sunlight, so the mounting position, the season and the amount of use affect how well the battery stays topped up.

Who it suits

It suits homes, sheds, garages and farms without a nearby power outlet, where a wired camera would be hard to install. It also suits people who want to look around a property from their phone.

What to check before you buy

  • Wi-Fi: confirm that your signal reaches the mounting spot on 2.4GHz.
  • Sunlight: check that the solar panel will get sun in the place you plan to use it.
  • Storage: buy a compatible micro SD card, or read the cloud plan terms.
  • Privacy: check local rules on cameras that record public spaces or neighbours' property, and on recording audio.
  • Mounting: read the manual for the mounting height and installation.
