The Reolink Argus PT Ultra is a wireless outdoor security camera that records in 4K and can turn to follow movement. It runs on a battery and comes with a detachable 3W solar panel, so it can be placed where there is no wiring. This page explains what the main specs mean and what to confirm before you choose it.

What 4K 8MP resolution means

4K, listed here as 8MP (3840 x 2160), is about four times the pixel count of 1080p. In practice the extra detail lets you zoom into a recording and still make out small features. Reolink also builds in a motion spotlight so the camera can show colour at night instead of grey infrared, which helps with details like clothing or a vehicle's colour.

Pan, tilt and auto-tracking

The camera rotates 355° horizontally and tilts 140° vertically. Reolink says this allows monitoring with no blind spots from a single mounting point. A fixed camera sees one angle, while a pan-and-tilt model can cover a yard or driveway on its own.

Auto-tracking lets the camera follow a moving subject in real time. Tracking works best in an open area, and it typically needs a clear line of sight to keep up with something moving.

Solar power and wireless setup

There are no cables to run. The 3W solar panel is detachable, so you can mount the panel in a sunnier place than the camera. Reolink says about 20 minutes of sunlight a day can be enough to power the camera daily. Real-world results depend on climate, shade and how often the camera records.

Smart detection and alerts

Motion sensors and detection algorithms sort events into people, vehicles and animals. You can set detection zones to ignore areas such as a busy road, which usually reduces unwanted alerts. When something is detected, the camera can sound a siren, turn on the spotlight and send a phone notification.

Storage options

Footage can be saved to a microSD card of up to 512GB, to a Reolink Home Hub, or to an FTP server. Reolink states there are no subscription fees for these options. The Home Hub also lets you build a wider wireless Reolink system around several cameras.

Who it suits

It suits people who need to cover a larger outdoor area, such as a driveway, garden or farmyard, with one camera, and who lack a nearby outlet. People who want to keep their recordings local will also find the storage choices useful.

What to check before you buy

  • Wi-Fi coverage: confirm a stable wireless signal where the camera will sit.
  • Sun for the panel: the panel can be mounted separately, so pick a spot that gets regular daylight.
  • Storage: decide between a microSD card, a Home Hub or an FTP server, and check what is in the box.
  • Weight and mounting: it weighs 3.0 lb (about 1.4 kg) and measures about 3.9 x 3.9 x 4.8 in (10 x 10 x 12 cm), so check that the mount point suits that.
  • Privacy rules: check local rules on cameras that face shared or public spaces, and follow the manual.
