The ORDRO Z20 is a handheld camcorder that records 1080p video at 30 frames per second and is sold as a kit with a microphone, a wide-angle lens, a handheld bracket and a memory card. It is aimed at people who want a simple, dedicated camera for family events, vlogs and casual projects rather than a phone or a full interchangeable-lens camera.

What the sensor and processor do

ORDRO lists an 8-megapixel 1/3.2-inch CMOS sensor paired with a Novatek image processor. Video is recorded as MP4 in Full HD (1920x1080), HD (1280x720) or VGA, all at 30 fps. Still photos are saved as JPEG, with sizes from 10 up to 24 megapixels. Resolutions above the sensor's native 8 megapixels are typically produced by interpolation, so the larger sizes add file size rather than extra detail.

The lens is fixed (f=3.8 mm, F/2.6). There is 16X digital zoom but no optical zoom. Digital zoom crops and enlarges the image, so quality usually drops as you zoom in; moving closer is generally better where you can.

Screen, WiFi and the phone app

The 3.0-inch IPS touch screen rotates through 270°, which makes it practical for filming yourself or holding the camera at awkward angles. Built-in WiFi works with ORDRO's "D Video" app, which can preview the picture, start recording, take photos and transfer files to a smartphone. Ports for HDMI, USB and an external microphone are included, so footage can be played back on a TV or the camera used as a webcam for video calls.

Infrared night vision

The Z20 has an infrared night-vision mode for low-light indoor shooting. Infrared images are usually monochrome, with a greenish or grey look, and the range depends on the room and the camera's infrared light. It suits dim rooms better than distant outdoor scenes.

Lenses, microphone and extras

The kit includes a 0.39x wide-angle lens for a wider field of view. According to ORDRO, the bottom of that lens unscrews to become a macro lens for close-ups of small objects. A CM550 microphone is supplied for clearer sound than a built-in microphone typically provides. Other features include anti-shake, face priority, continuous shooting, time-lapse, a date watermark and recording while charging.

In the box: the camera, lens cover, 32 GB SD card, remote control, HDMI/USB cable, two NP-40 batteries (3.7 V, 1250 mAh each) and the handheld bracket.

Size and storage

The camera measures about 125.5 x 57.3 x 61 mm (roughly 4.9 x 2.3 x 2.4 in) and weighs 320 g. It accepts Class 10 microSD cards up to 128 GB. Full HD video at typical camcorder bit rates uses several gigabytes per hour, so a larger card helps for long events.

Who it suits

It suits beginners, families recording events, and casual vloggers who want a dedicated device with a rotating screen and extras included. People wanting 4K, optical zoom or strong low-light colour performance should compare the spec sheet with their needs.

What to check before you buy

  • Video needs: it records 1080p at 30 fps and has digital zoom only.
  • Phone compatibility: confirm that the "D Video" app works with your phone's operating system.
  • Storage: the included card is 32 GB; cards up to 128 GB are supported.
  • Batteries: two are included; consider how long your typical shoot lasts.
  • Audio: check that the microphone connection suits how you plan to film.
  • Night vision: expect infrared images rather than full-colour footage in the dark.
