The NETGEAR XS508M is an unmanaged switch with eight multi-gigabit Ethernet ports. Each port can run at 1, 2.5, 5 or 10 Gbps, so one switch can connect a mix of older and newer devices. It is a plug-and-play way to add faster wired connections to a home office or small business network.

What multi-gigabit means

Standard Ethernet jumps from 1 Gbps straight to 10 Gbps. Multi-gigabit adds the steps between, at 2.5 and 5 Gbps, and typically negotiates the best speed each connected device supports. In practice, a computer with a 2.5G port and a NAS with a 10G port can each link at their own speed. The XS508M lists eight such ports, each covering 1G, 2.5G, 5G and 10G.

Cabling matters. Many existing Cat5e and Cat6 cables handle 2.5G or 5G over typical home distances, while 10G over copper generally calls for Cat6a or better.

The SFP+ port

Beside the eight copper ports is one 1G/10G SFP+ port. NETGEAR notes it is shared, so it works as an alternative to one of the copper ports rather than adding a ninth connection. SFP+ takes a module or a direct-attach cable, which is common for fibre links or short connections to other equipment. Check the manual to see which copper port it is paired with.

Unmanaged, plug-and-play

NETGEAR says there is no software to install and no configuration needed. You connect the cables and power on. An unmanaged switch has no menu for VLANs or traffic rules, so it suits networks that just need more fast ports. If you need to segment traffic, a managed switch is the usual choice.

Quiet and energy-aware operation

The listing describes a design that reduces fan noise for home offices and business settings. NETGEAR also says most models comply with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet mode, which typically lowers power draw on idle links.

Desktop or rack mounting

The XS508M measures 6.7 x 12.9 x 1.7 inches and weighs 5.4 lb. The box includes a rack mounting kit and rubber footpads for tabletop use, plus the switch with its internal power supply, regional power cords and a quick installation guide.

Warranty

NETGEAR lists ProSAFE Lifetime Protection, which it describes as a Lifetime Limited Hardware Warranty, next-business-day replacement and 24/7 chat with a NETGEAR expert. Read the terms to see what applies in your region.

Who it suits

It suits home offices with a fast NAS or workstation, small businesses upgrading from Gigabit, and anyone who wants mixed-speed devices on one unmanaged switch.

What to check before you buy

  • Device speeds: confirm what your network cards and NAS support.
  • Cables: check that your cabling can carry the speed you want.
  • Shared port: remember the SFP+ port shares a connection with a copper port.
  • Management needs: this switch is unmanaged, so it has no VLAN settings.
  • Space: it is 12.9 inches wide, so check your desk or rack.
  • Power: it uses a regional power cord and an internal power supply.

The short version

  • Eight multi-gigabit ports at 1G, 2.5G, 5G and 10G.
  • One shared 1G/10G SFP+ port.
  • Unmanaged and plug-and-play.
  • Desktop or rack mounting, with the rack kit and footpads included.
  • ProSAFE Lifetime Protection warranty.
