The NETGEAR WBE710 is a WiFi 7 wireless access point for adding or improving wireless coverage in a home, office or small business. Unlike a router, an access point connects by cable to your existing network and turns that connection into WiFi, so it's a common way to cover a larger space properly. Here is what its specs mean.
What WiFi 7 and BE9400 mean
WiFi 7 is the common name for the 802.11be standard. NETGEAR labels this access point tri-band BE9400, which refers to the combined theoretical speed across its three radio bands. Real-world speeds depend on your devices, distance, walls and interference, and they are always lower than the headline figure. A device also needs WiFi 7 support to use all the newer features, although older WiFi devices can still connect.
Tri-band generally means the access point has three radios, typically 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. Spreading devices across three bands can ease congestion where many clients connect at once.
Capacity and coverage
NETGEAR says the access point supports up to 256 client devices and covers around 3,000 square feet (about 280 square metres). MU-MIMO lets it communicate with several devices at the same time instead of one after another, and OFDMA divides a channel into smaller parts so that many small transmissions, such as those from phones and smart-home devices, can share it efficiently. Coverage figures are best-case numbers, and thick walls and floors reduce them.
The 2.5G port
The wired connection is a single 2.5G Ethernet port. NETGEAR advises connecting it to wired Ethernet for maximum speed. A 2.5G port is faster than the standard gigabit port found on older equipment, so it avoids a bottleneck between the access point and the rest of the network. To use that speed you also need a switch or router with a matching multi-gig port and suitable cabling.
PoE+ power
The access point can be powered through the same Ethernet cable using PoE+ (Power over Ethernet, 802.3at), which means one cable per access point and no nearby power outlet. That helps when mounting on a ceiling. It needs a PoE+ switch or injector. If you'd rather use mains power, NETGEAR offers an optional AC adapter that is sold separately and isn't included.
Management and security
Setup works with the NETGEAR Insight app, and the optional Insight cloud management lets you set up, configure and manage the device from anywhere. NETGEAR lists WPA3 security, bandsteering (which nudges capable devices onto less crowded bands), mesh support and up to eight SSIDs. Multiple SSIDs let you run separate networks, such as one for guests and one for staff.
Installation
NETGEAR includes mounting hardware for a wall or a suspended ceiling. Placement matters more than most settings: a central, elevated position with a clear line to the devices usually gives the best coverage.
Who it suits
It suits homes and small offices that want WiFi 7 and a wired 2.5G backhaul, and people who want to manage several access points from one app. It's less relevant if your devices and internet service are well below WiFi 7 and multi-gig speeds.
What to check before you buy
- PoE+ source: confirm you have a PoE+ switch or injector, or buy the AC adapter separately.
- Network speed: a 2.5G switch port and suitable cable are needed to use the full wired speed.
- Client devices: WiFi 7 features need WiFi 7 devices.
- Management: check which features need Insight and whether any subscription applies.
- Mounting: make sure your wall or ceiling suits the supplied hardware.
- Cabling: plan the cable run to the mounting point.
