The NETGEAR WAX615 is a ceiling or wall-mounted wireless access point for small and medium businesses. It adds WiFi 6 coverage to a wired network and is managed from the cloud through NETGEAR Insight. Here is what its main specs mean and what to confirm before choosing it.
What an access point does
An access point is not a router. It connects to your existing network by cable and turns that connection into wireless coverage. A business with a router or switch already in place typically adds access points where WiFi is needed, and manages them together. That is the role of the WAX615.
WiFi 6 speed and capacity
NETGEAR describes the WAX615 as a 2x2 WiFi 6 (802.11ax) access point with AX3000 speed, giving aggregate speeds up to 3Gbps. It uses 2x2 multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), which lets the access point talk to several devices at once instead of one after another. Real speeds depend on distance, walls, interference and the devices connecting, and are well below the combined figure for any single device.
The listing is not consistent on a few points, so confirm them with NETGEAR before you buy. The description calls it dual-band, while one feature line mentions a 6GHz band and a 7.8Gbps tri-band figure. Client capacity appears as 256 devices in the title and 456 in the features, with coverage of 3,000 sq. ft. (about 280 sq. m). Check the manufacturer's data sheet for the exact radio bands and client limits.
Wired connection and power
The unit has one 2.5G Ethernet port, which NETGEAR says lets it link to a 2.5G switch for the fastest wired speeds, plus one 1G port for wired devices. It can be powered over Ethernet, so a single cable carries both data and power, which makes ceiling installation simpler. The listing mentions PoE+ in the title and PoE++ in the features, so confirm what your switch or injector supplies. A separate AC adapter (model PAV12V35) is sold separately.
Security and network separation
NETGEAR lists enterprise-level security with up to 8 SSIDs, WPA3 security, VLAN support and client isolation. Multiple SSIDs let one access point broadcast separate networks, for example one for staff and one for guests. VLANs and client isolation keep those groups apart on the wired network.
Cloud management with Insight
The WAX615 is managed through NETGEAR Insight, which lets you configure and monitor access points from an app or browser, without separate controller hardware. NETGEAR includes a one-year Insight subscription for remote management. Check the terms for the period after that. NETGEAR also lists a five-year warranty.
Installation
Mounting hardware is included for walls and suspended ceilings. The packaged item measures about 11.6 x 11.4 x 4.3 inches (29 x 29 x 11 cm) and weighs about 2.4 lb (1.1 kg). The listing says it is made for use in the U.S. only, so check regional rules if you are elsewhere.
Who it suits
It suits offices, clinics and similar small business sites that want managed WiFi across several access points, with separate guest and staff networks. It is less suited to a home with a single router that already covers the space.
What to check before you buy
- Radio bands and client limits: confirm them in NETGEAR's data sheet, given the listing's mixed figures.
- Power: check that your switch supplies the right PoE standard, or plan for the separate adapter.
- Switch ports: a 2.5G switch port is needed to use the faster wired connection.
- Management: decide whether you want a cloud subscription after the included period.
- Region: confirm it is approved for use where you live.
- Coverage: plan the number and position of access points for your floor plan.
