The NETGEAR GS752TPP is a 52-port smart managed switch built for medium and large installations that need to power many devices over Ethernet. It has 48 gigabit ports that all support PoE+, plus four SFP ports for uplinks. It is the kind of switch used behind a building's cameras, phones and wireless access points. Here is what the specs mean.
Ports and total PoE power
NETGEAR lists 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, all of which support PoE+, and four 1G SFP ports. PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) can deliver up to 30W to each powered device at the port. The total PoE power is 760W. Even though 48 ports at 30W would be 1,440W, 760W is ample for typical loads: it averages about 15.8W per port across all 48, which covers most phones, access points and fixed cameras. Heavier devices simply use a larger share.
To plan properly, add up the maximum draw of every device you will connect and check the total against 760W.
Smart managed features
This switch is a "smart" managed model, with a web-based interface rather than the full command-line toolset of a high-end enterprise switch. NETGEAR says it offers managed control for secure setup and access, and supports SNMP management with NMS300. Typical smart-switch tools include VLANs, QoS and port monitoring, but you should check the product documentation for the exact feature list. NETGEAR also lists optional Insight cloud management, for remote monitoring through an app.
SFP uplinks
The four 1G SFP slots take small modules. They are typically used to link to another switch, to a router or across a long distance over fibre. Modules are bought separately.
Placement and noise
The switch can sit on a desk or go into a rack, and NETGEAR says all the necessary mounting hardware is in the box. At 17.3 inches wide and 1.7 inches (one rack unit) high, it matches a standard 19-inch rack, and it weighs 11.1 lb. NETGEAR describes the operation as quiet, but a switch driving a high PoE load will use its fans more, so a closet or equipment room is still a sensible location.
Efficiency and support
The design complies with IEEE 802.3az energy-efficient Ethernet, which lowers power use on idle links. NETGEAR states a Lifetime Limited Hardware Warranty with next-business-day replacement and 24/7 chat access to a NETGEAR expert; read the warranty terms for conditions.
Who it suits
It suits offices, schools, warehouses and larger homes or labs with many cameras, phones or access points that need one central, powered connection point. A smaller setup may need far fewer ports.
What to check before you buy
- Total power: total up your PoE devices and compare with 760W.
- Device standards: confirm they use 802.3af or 802.3at.
- Management needs: check whether the smart feature set covers the VLANs and monitoring you want.
- Uplinks: decide what SFP modules or cables you need for the four 1G SFP ports.
- Rack and airflow: check rack depth, space and ventilation, and follow the manual and local electrical codes for power connections.
- Cabling: use good-quality Ethernet cable, and keep runs within about 100 metres.
The short version
- 52 ports: 48 gigabit PoE+ ports and four 1G SFP.
- 760W of total PoE power.
- Smart managed interface with SNMP support and optional Insight cloud management.
- Desktop or rackmount, with mounting hardware included.
- Energy-efficient Ethernet (802.3az) and a limited lifetime hardware warranty.
