The NETGEAR GS724TPP is a smart managed Ethernet switch with 24 Gigabit ports that all supply Power over Ethernet Plus, plus two SFP slots. NETGEAR positions it for wireless networks, IP surveillance and video-over-IP, where many devices need both data and power from one cable.
Ports and speeds
There are 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 x 1G SFP ports. Gigabit is the common speed for most computers, access points and cameras. SFP slots take small plug-in modules, usually fibre, so the switch can link to another switch over a long distance or connect to a device in another room. Because these are 1G slots, they take 1G modules.
PoE+ and a 380W allowance
PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) is the standard that supplies more power per port than basic PoE. NETGEAR gives a total PoE power of 380W across the 24 ports. That total is shared: if every port needed the maximum a PoE+ port can supply, the demand would be higher than 380W, but most devices use much less. Add up the needs of your cameras, access points and phones, and compare it with the total.
What "smart managed" means
"Smart managed" generally means a switch with a web interface and a useful set of management features, but fewer than a fully managed enterprise model. NETGEAR says the switch gives managed control for secure setup and access, along with SNMP (NMS 300) management. It also works with NETGEAR Insight, an app and cloud service for managing the network remotely; the listing calls cloud management optional.
Placement and warranty
The switch can be used on a desktop or in a rack, and the mounting hardware is included. NETGEAR describes quiet operation and an energy-efficient design that complies with IEEE 802.3az (Energy Efficient Ethernet). It lists a limited lifetime hardware warranty, next-business-day replacement and 24/7 chat with an expert. Check the terms and the registration steps.
Size
It measures about 8.0 x 17.3 x 1.7 inches (roughly 20 x 44 x 4.3 cm) and weighs 8.2 lb (about 3.7 kg). The 17.3-inch width matches a standard 19-inch rack mount.
Who it suits
It suits small and medium-sized businesses, schools or larger homes that need to run many PoE devices, such as access points and IP cameras, with some management control. It is more than a small home needs, if only a few devices are involved.
What to check before you buy
- PoE power: total the maximum draw of your devices and compare it with the 380W allowance.
- Speeds: all the copper ports are gigabit; if you need 2.5G or 10G ports, look elsewhere.
- SFP modules: modules or cables for the two SFP slots are separate items.
- Management: confirm whether you want to use the web interface, SNMP or Insight.
- Space and cooling: leave room for airflow in a rack or on a desk.
- Installation: follow the manual and local electrical and cabling codes.
The short version
- A 24-port Gigabit smart managed switch with 2 x 1G SFP slots.
- All 24 ports are PoE+, sharing a 380W total.
- Web, SNMP and optional NETGEAR Insight cloud management.
- Desktop or rackmount, with the mounting hardware included.
- Limited lifetime hardware warranty, according to NETGEAR.
