The NETGEAR GS316PP is a 16-port Gigabit Ethernet switch that can also power devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points and VoIP phones through the same cable. It is unmanaged, which means there is nothing to configure. This page explains what its specs mean and how to work out whether the total power fits your devices.
What PoE+ does
Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electrical power along an Ethernet cable together with data, so a camera or access point needs only one cable and no nearby outlet. PoE+ is the IEEE 802.3at standard, which provides up to 30 W per port at the switch. All 16 ports on the GS316PP support PoE+, according to NETGEAR, and the Gigabit speed suits most office and home traffic.
The 183W power limit
The key number is the total PoE power of 183 W, shared across all ports. If 16 devices each needed 30 W, that would exceed it, but most cameras, phones and access points draw far less. Add up the maximum draw listed for each device you plan to connect and compare it to 183 W, leaving some headroom.
NETGEAR describes FlexPoE technology, which lets you change the available PoE power with interchangeable external power adapters. The brand says the switch also balances power by each device's actual needs, rather than by the PoE class it reports.
Setup and operation
NETGEAR describes plug-and-play setup with no software to install and no configuration. Unmanaged switches do not offer VLANs, port-level settings or detailed monitoring; they simply pass traffic. If you need those, look at a managed or smart switch instead.
The design is fanless, and NETGEAR says it runs silently, which suits offices, classrooms and living spaces. It is also listed as energy efficient, meeting IEEE 802.3az (Energy Efficient Ethernet).
Mounting and size
The switch measures about 14.6 x 11.7 x 3.3 inches (37 x 30 x 8.4 cm). It can sit on a desk or be mounted on a wall. Allow space around it for ventilation, since a fanless design relies on airflow.
Warranty and region
NETGEAR lists a three-year limited hardware warranty and 24/7 chat support. The listing states it is made for use in the U.S. and Canada, so check this if you are buying for use elsewhere.
Who it suits
It suits small businesses, home offices, shops and homes with several PoE devices, such as security cameras or wireless access points, and that want no setup. It is less suited to networks that need VLANs, link aggregation or monitoring.
What to check before you buy
- Power: total your devices' maximum draw against 183 W.
- Standard: confirm each device supports 802.3af or 802.3at PoE, or can run on a passive injector.
- Cable runs: Ethernet and PoE distances are typically limited to about 100 m (328 ft) per run.
- Ports: count current and future devices, plus the uplink to your router.
- Placement: confirm there is an outlet and enough clearance for ventilation.
- Management: decide whether an unmanaged switch meets your needs.
