The NETGEAR GS308EP is an eight-port Gigabit Ethernet switch where every port can supply Power over Ethernet. It is a Smart Managed Plus model, which means it adds a simple software interface to the plug-and-play convenience of a basic switch. NETGEAR positions it for powering and connecting VoIP phones, IP cameras, wireless access points and similar devices in a home or small business.
Eight Gigabit ports, all with PoE
Each of the eight ports runs at up to 1 Gbps, and NETGEAR lists PoE on all eight. PoE sends power and data over a single Ethernet cable, so a camera or access point doesn't need a nearby outlet. The description refers to PoE+, the IEEE 802.3at standard, which typically allows up to about 30W for a single device.
The key number is the total: 62W across the whole switch. That's shared between the powered ports. A single 30W device would use almost half of it, while eight small devices at 7W each would fit comfortably. Add up the wattage your devices need before relying on all eight ports.
What "Smart Managed Plus" adds
Compared with a fully unmanaged switch, this model has Plus software with an easy-to-use interface that NETGEAR says offers basic managed capabilities to configure, secure and monitor your network. In general, switches in this class offer features such as VLANs, port settings and PoE management through a web page, without the complexity of a full enterprise switch. That's useful for separating camera traffic from office traffic, or for checking which port is using power. NETGEAR also mentions advanced network management features to help optimise performance; read the product documentation to see exactly which ones are included.
Compact size, mounting and noise
The switch is small: about 6.2 x 4.0 x 1.1 inches (roughly 15.7 x 10.2 x 2.8 cm) and 2.4 lb (about 1.1 kg). NETGEAR says it can be placed on a desktop or wall mounted. It describes the operation as silent, which suits offices, shops and living spaces. Check the manual for ventilation and placement.
Efficiency and support
The design complies with IEEE 802.3az, the Energy-Efficient Ethernet standard, which reduces power use on idle links. NETGEAR lists a 3-year limited hardware warranty, and the listing says the switch is made for use in the U.S. and Canada.
Who it suits
It suits homes and small offices that want several powered devices on one managed switch, such as a few cameras plus an access point, or a small VoIP phone system. The basic management features make it a reasonable fit for people who want to set up VLANs without a full managed switch. It is less suited to setups with many high-draw PoE devices, since 62W is limited.
What to check before you buy
- Total PoE power: add up your devices' wattage and compare it with 62W.
- Device standards: confirm the PoE type (802.3af or 802.3at) of each device.
- Management needs: check which features the Plus software offers against what you need.
- Port count: eight ports total, including your uplink to the router.
- Cabling: use Cat5e or better cable, within the 100 m limit.
- Placement: decide between desktop and wall mounting, and check for mounting hardware.
The short version
- 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch with PoE on all ports and 62W total power.
- Smart Managed Plus software for basic configuration, security and monitoring.
- Desktop or wall mount; silent operation, per NETGEAR.
- IEEE 802.3az energy-efficient design; 3-year limited hardware warranty.
- Made for use in the U.S. and Canada.
