The NETGEAR GS305PP is a small five-port Gigabit Ethernet switch that can also power devices through the network cable. Four of its ports supply PoE+, so cameras, wireless access points and similar gear can run from a single cable each. It needs no software and no configuration.

What PoE+ does

Power over Ethernet sends electricity and data over the same cable. That removes the need for a separate power adapter and nearby outlet at each device, which helps when mounting something on a ceiling or outside wall. PoE+ is the standard known as IEEE 802.3at, which typically allows up to 30W per port for devices that need more than basic PoE. NETGEAR lists four PoE+ ports on this switch and 83W of total PoE power.

Understanding the 83W limit

The 83W is shared. If you connect four devices, their combined draw has to stay within 83W. In general terms, a typical IP camera or access point uses well below the per-port limit, so four of them usually fit, but larger devices use more. Check each device's rated power draw and add them up. NETGEAR describes the switch as suited to the home, small offices or small conference rooms.

Ports and setup

There are five Gigabit Ethernet ports in total. With four used for PoE+ devices, one port remains for the uplink to your router or modem, which NETGEAR says it connects to automatically for four wired connections. NETGEAR describes the connectivity as high-speed and non-blocking. Because the switch is unmanaged, there are no VLANs or settings pages.

Placement and noise

The case is metal and the design is fanless, so operation is silent, which NETGEAR points to for noise-sensitive spaces. It measures 9.4 x 4.0 x 1.1 inches (roughly 24 x 10 x 2.8 cm) and supports desktop or wall mounting. A fanless unit that powers devices does produce some heat, so allow airflow around it.

Energy efficiency and warranty

The design complies with IEEE 802.3az (Energy-Efficient Ethernet), which reduces power use when links are quiet. NETGEAR gives a 3-year limited hardware warranty. The listing states the switch is made for use in the U.S. and Canada only, so check that against where you live.

Who it suits

It suits small setups that need a few PoE+ devices: a home network with a couple of cameras and an access point, or a small office that wants tidy cabling. Networks that need more ports, higher-power devices or management features will need a larger or managed switch.

What to check before you buy

  • Power draw: add up the rated wattage of your PoE devices and compare it with the 83W total.
  • PoE standard: confirm your devices support PoE or PoE+ (802.3af/at).
  • Port count: one port is needed for the uplink, so four devices is the limit.
  • Cable run: Ethernet cables are typically limited to about 100 metres.
  • Mounting: check what wall-mount hardware is included and how the manual says to position it.
  • Region: the listing says it is for the U.S. and Canada.

The short version

  • NETGEAR GS305PP: five Gigabit ports, four of them PoE+.
  • 83W total PoE power shared among the four ports.
  • Plug-and-play; no software or configuration.
  • Silent fanless metal case; desktop or wall mount.
  • IEEE 802.3az energy efficiency and a 3-year limited hardware warranty.
