The NETGEAR GS110TP is a compact 10-port Gigabit Ethernet switch for small networks. Eight ports supply Power over Ethernet (PoE+), and two SFP ports take fibre or copper uplink modules. It is a smart managed switch, so it has a browser-based interface for settings that plain unmanaged switches lack.
PoE+ and the 55W limit
Power over Ethernet carries electricity along the network cable, so devices such as IP phones, wireless access points and security cameras need only one cable. PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) allows up to 30 watts per port, and NETGEAR lists that figure for each of the eight PoE ports.
The important number is the switch's total PoE power: 55W across all ports. That does not allow eight devices to draw 30W at once. It suits a modest set of devices, such as a few phones and cameras, and a single 30W device uses over half the total. Add up the draw of what you plan to connect and compare it with 55W.
Ports and uplinks
- 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports, all PoE+ capable.
- 2 x 1G SFP ports for fibre uplinks, which NETGEAR describes as dedicated. SFP modules are small plug-in transceivers, bought separately, for fibre runs or longer distances than copper allows.
Smart management
NETGEAR describes a web browser management interface with Layer 2 features such as VLANs (which split a network into separate logical groups) and PoE operation scheduling, which can switch power to ports at set times. The listing also names Layer 3 static routing including IPv6 management, ACLs, DiffServ QoS, LACP link aggregation and Spanning Tree, plus SNMP support.
NETGEAR Insight offers remote management through an app or cloud portal. The listing notes that Insight cloud activation is subscription-based, so check what is included in your region.
Quiet and efficient
The switch has no fan, and NETGEAR says it is silent in desktop operation, which suits offices and other noise-sensitive rooms. It supports Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az), which cuts power use on idle links.
Placement and size
It measures 9.3 x 4.0 x 1.1 inches (about 23.6 x 10.2 x 2.8 cm) and weighs 1.5 lb (about 0.7 kg). It can sit on a desk or be wall-mounted. The listing states it is made for use in the U.S. and Canada only.
Support
NETGEAR lists a Lifetime Limited Hardware Warranty, next business day replacement and 24/7 chat support.
Who it suits
It suits small offices, shops-front networks and home labs that want to power a handful of PoE devices and want VLANs and scheduling. It is not meant for sites with many high-draw PoE devices.
What to check before you buy
- Total PoE draw: make sure your devices fit within 55W.
- Per-device class: check each device's PoE standard against the 30W per-port limit.
- Uplink needs: decide whether you need SFP modules, and which type.
- Features: confirm the management features you need are available in your setup.
- Cloud service: read the Insight terms.
- Region: the switch is for U.S. and Canadian use.
