The NETGEAR GS108T (GS108Tv3) is a small eight-port Gigabit switch with managed features. Unlike a plain unmanaged switch, it has a web interface where you can configure VLANs, traffic priorities and security. NETGEAR positions it for small and medium businesses that need to deploy VoIP phones and IP surveillance, and it is compact enough for a desk or wall.

What "smart managed" means

A managed or smart managed switch lets you control how traffic moves through your network. NETGEAR describes a browser-based management interface with configurable Layer 2 features such as VLANs and QoS. A VLAN splits one physical switch into separate virtual networks, for example one for phones and one for office computers. QoS (quality of service) gives priority to time-sensitive traffic such as voice calls. For a simple home network you may not need either, but they are useful in an office.

NETGEAR also lists more advanced features: Layer 3 static routing including IPv6 management, ACLs (access control lists), DiffServ QoS, LACP link aggregation and Spanning Tree. In general, link aggregation combines links for more throughput or redundancy, and Spanning Tree prevents network loops.

Ports

There are eight Gigabit Ethernet ports. The description also mentions two dedicated SFP ports for fibre uplinks, which let you connect to another switch over fibre, typically for longer distances. The listing also mentions one PD port, meaning a port that can be powered through Power over Ethernet from another device; check NETGEAR's specifications for exactly which port, and for whether the switch can supply power to other devices.

Remote management

The switch supports SNMP management and NETGEAR Insight, an app and cloud portal for remote monitoring and management. The description says Insight cloud management activation is subscription-based, so check the terms for what is included before relying on it.

Silent, compact and easy to place

The switch has no fan, so it is silent, which NETGEAR highlights for noise-sensitive environments. It can be placed on a desk or mounted on a wall. It measures about 4.1 x 6.2 x 1.1 inches (roughly 10.4 x 15.7 x 2.8 cm) and weighs about 1 lb (450 g). Its energy-efficient design follows IEEE 802.3az, which reduces power use on idle links.

Support

NETGEAR provides a limited lifetime hardware warranty, next business day replacement and 24/7 chat support. Read the exact terms on the maker's site. The listing says the product is made for use in the US and Canada only.

Who it suits

It suits small offices, home labs and workshops that want VLANs, QoS and monitoring in a quiet, small box. If you only need to add ports, an unmanaged switch is easier.

What to check before you buy

  • Features: confirm that the VLAN, QoS and routing features you need are supported.
  • Management: decide whether you will use the web interface, SNMP or Insight, and read the Insight subscription terms.
  • Power: check how the PD port is powered and whether that suits your setup.
  • Uplinks: if you plan to use SFP fibre, check which modules are compatible.
  • Placement: confirm desk or wall mounting and what's in the box.
  • Region: it is listed for use in the US and Canada only.
