The MAONO DM50 is a USB condenser microphone for streaming, podcasting, calls and home recording. It plugs straight into a computer or console, with no separate audio interface. Here is what its main features mean and how to decide whether it fits your setup.
Condenser microphone and polar patterns
A condenser microphone is sensitive and detailed, which is why it is common in studios and for voice work. A polar pattern describes the directions from which a microphone picks up sound. MAONO says the DM50 has a double-capsule array and three patterns:
- Cardioid picks up mainly what is in front. It is typically the choice for solo vocals, singing, instruments and streaming, since it reduces room noise from behind.
- Bidirectional picks up the front and back, so two people can record face to face.
- Omnidirectional picks up sound from all around, which suits meetings and band practice.
Smart knob and metering
MAONO describes a multifunction knob on the front that controls microphone gain, headphone volume and the monitor mix, with a nine-block level meter. A tap switches the knob between each parameter. A mute button on top cuts the signal. Gain is worth setting carefully: too high and the sound distorts, too low and noise becomes more noticeable.
Software and effects
With the MAONO Link or MAONO Arena software, which must be downloaded and installed, you get vocal effects, HD samples and tools such as EQ, a limiter and noise reduction. The microphone has a DSP chip, and MAONO says parameters set in the computer software are saved in the microphone. Built-in RGB and status lights can be customised through the software.
Build quality
The body is metal, which MAONO says is cut, welded and polished through a multi-step process for a solid, durable feel. A metal body typically adds weight and stability on a desk stand, though a boom arm or shock mount can also help reduce desk vibration.
Plug and play
The microphone connects by USB and works with computers and consoles listed by MAONO, including PC, Mac, PS5 and PS4. For a laptop on the go, no extra power supply is needed, as USB provides power. Check the supported platforms in the manual before relying on a console connection.
Who it suits
It suits streamers, podcasters, voice-over beginners, musicians recording demos and remote workers who want clearer calls. If you need to plug in several microphones to a mixer, an XLR microphone and interface may suit better.
What to check before you buy
- Connection: confirm your computer or console has a free USB port and works with the cable supplied.
- Software: note that effects and lighting need the MAONO software on a computer.
- Room: a condenser mic picks up keyboard clicks and echo, so a quiet space helps.
- Mounting: check what stand or arm fits, and consider a pop filter.
- Headphones: the knob controls headphone volume, so check where you plug them in.
- Specs: the listing doesn't give sample rate and bit depth, so confirm them in the manual.
