The BOYA BY-V30 is a small wireless lavalier microphone for recording voice on a phone, tablet or laptop. A lavalier is a clip-on mic worn near the mouth, and a wireless one removes the cable between you and the recorder. This USB-C version plugs straight into the device, so there is no app or Bluetooth pairing.

How the system works

The kit has a tiny transmitter you clip to clothing and a receiver that plugs into the USB-C port. BOYA says you take the transmitter from the charging case, switch it on and plug in the receiver, and the two pair automatically. It lists compatibility with Android phones, iPhone 16 and 15, iPads, laptops and other devices with USB-C. BOYA notes that the "OTG" function should be enabled on the device first.

Size and clipping

The transmitter weighs only 10.5g. A 360° rotating clip attaches to clothing, and the pickup is omnidirectional, so it captures sound from all directions. Omnidirectional mics are forgiving about positioning but can also pick up more room sound, so closer to the mouth usually sounds clearer.

Noise reduction and wind

An NR button switches on BOYA's noise reduction. A high-density foam cover helps with wind noise, and an optional windshield is mentioned for outdoor use. Noise reduction usually works best on steady background sound and is no substitute for a quiet space.

Range

BOYA says the range is up to 328 feet (100m), double that of its earlier BY-V series. Such figures are measured in open space. Walls, crowds and other wireless devices typically reduce the distance in real use.

Battery life and charging case

A transmitter records for up to 9 hours on a charge, with about 2 hours to recharge. The pocket-size case adds a further 36 hours of power, according to BOYA.

Who it suits

It suits vloggers, interviewers, podcasters, teachers and people on video calls who want hands-free sound better than a phone's built-in mic. It is a compact kit for people on the move.

What to check before you buy

  • Port: this listing is for the USB-C version, so confirm your device has a USB-C port and supports OTG audio input.
  • Cases: a thick phone case might stop the receiver from seating fully.
  • Single or dual: check how many transmitters come in the kit if you need to record two people.
  • Where you'll use it: crowded or wireless-heavy spaces may shorten range.
  • Monitoring: check whether you can monitor the sound while recording.
  • Upkeep: keep the foam cover clean and replace it if it wears.
