The HPE Instant On AP17 (model R2X10A) is a weatherproof-style outdoor wireless access point from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. It extends a WiFi 5 network to places where an indoor unit would not suit, such as patios, poolsides, outdoor cafes or open-air lots. It is managed from a phone app or web portal and is powered over an Ethernet cable.
What "2x2 WiFi 5" means
WiFi 5 is the common name for the 802.11ac standard. "2x2" means the access point uses two radio streams for sending and two for receiving. HPE specifies the hardware for 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz band (802.11ac) and 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band (802.11n), for a combined figure of 1,167 Mbps.
That combined number is a total across both bands. A single device typically connects on one band at a time and will see less than the headline figure, because real speeds depend on distance, obstacles, interference and the device's own radio. The 5 GHz band is generally faster but covers a shorter range, while 2.4 GHz reaches further and passes through obstacles somewhat better.
Powering it with PoE
This model ships as the unit only. HPE recommends powering it with Power over Ethernet (PoE) 802.3af, Class 2, and says you must supply the power source yourself from a PoE switch or a PoE injector. With PoE, one network cable carries both data and electricity, so there's no need for a power outlet near the mounting point. The access point has one gigabit 100/1000 uplink port that connects back to your network.
Mounting for coverage
HPE says coverage is best when the unit is mounted on a wall or high on a pole, and it ships with a wall mount bracket. Height helps because it gives the signal a clearer path across an open area. For a pole mount, check what fittings you need, since the listing mentions only the wall bracket.
Setup and management
The Instant On system is cloud-hosted. You set up and manage the access point through the Instant On mobile app or the web portal, and HPE says setup takes minutes. If you run several Instant On access points, the same interface lets you keep network logins and security settings consistent across them. HPE says you can mix this outdoor model with other Instant On access points for indoor areas. It also states a two-year warranty and no extra licensing fees.
How many devices it suits
HPE recommends the AP17 for around 50 active devices. "Active" matters here: a device sitting idle uses little capacity, while many people streaming video at once use a lot. For a small cafe terrace, a pool area or a modest outdoor lot, that is a reasonable scale. Larger or very busy venues may need more than one access point.
Who it suits
It suits small businesses and venues that want outdoor WiFi without a complicated controller setup, and people who already use Instant On equipment indoors. It is less suited to anyone who wants a plug-and-play unit with no network cabling, since it needs PoE.
What to check before you buy
- Power source: confirm you have a PoE switch or injector that matches the 802.3af requirement, as none is included.
- Cabling: work out how an Ethernet cable will run from your network to the mounting spot.
- Mounting: decide on a wall or pole, and check whether you need extra hardware for a pole.
- Coverage area: consider the size of the space and any walls, trees or vehicles that will block the signal.
- Device count: compare the recommended 50 active devices with your expected use.
- Installation: follow the manual and local rules for outdoor and electrical installation.
