The HPE Networking Instant On 1430 16-port switch (model R8R48A) is an unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch that also supplies Power over Ethernet. It is designed for small businesses and home offices that want to connect computers and power devices such as access points, IP phones and security cameras without any configuration.

What unmanaged means here

An unmanaged switch has no settings to change. You plug it in, connect cables and it works. HPE describes the 1430 as "install and forget", with automated functions and no ongoing administration. That makes it a fit for people who want reliable wired connections and don't need VLANs or other network controls.

Ports and speed

All 16 ports are 10/100/1000 copper RJ45 ports, so each can run at up to Gigabit speed. Ordinary computers, printers and network storage can use these ports, and so can PoE devices.

Understanding the 124W PoE limit

All 16 ports are Class 4 PoE ports, and the total power limit is 124 watts. Power over Ethernet delivers electricity through the network cable, which removes the need for a separate power adapter at each device. The limit is shared across all ports: Class 4 is a higher-power class, but with 124W in total the switch can't supply the maximum to every port at once. Add up the power draw of your devices and keep it below 124W.

Quiet, fanless design

The switch has no fan, so it makes no fan noise, and HPE says it supports energy-efficient Ethernet to reduce power use. Because it relies on passive cooling, leave space around it and keep it out of enclosed, hot spaces.

Mounting options

HPE says the switch supports table-top, wall and under-table mounting. It includes brackets for wall mounting with the ports facing up or down, and has mounting holes on the base for under-table installation. Power comes from an external adapter. The listed dimensions of 19.5 x 13.5 x 4.8 inches may include packaging, so check the product's own dimensions in the manual.

Warranty and support

HPE mentions a limited lifetime warranty and support. Confirm the terms with HPE for your region.

Who it suits

It suits a small office, a small practice or a home office with a few PoE devices, such as a wireless access point and a couple of IP cameras, plus wired computers on the same switch.

What to check before you buy

  • PoE total: compare your devices' combined wattage with 124W.
  • Device compatibility: confirm each PoE device works with the switch's PoE standard.
  • Management needs: an unmanaged switch can't set up VLANs or detailed traffic rules.
  • Mounting: decide on table, wall or under-table installation and check the brackets match.
  • Power: the external adapter needs an outlet within reach.
  • Cabling: use Cat5e or better cables for Gigabit speeds.

The short version

  • Unmanaged 16-port Gigabit switch with Class 4 PoE on all 16 ports.
  • 124W total PoE limit, shared across ports.
  • Fanless and quiet, with table, wall and under-table mounting.
  • No configuration needed.
  • Limited lifetime warranty, as listed.
