The fanxiang S880E is a 1TB M.2 2280 solid state drive that uses the PCIe 4.0 interface and the NVMe protocol. It is aimed at gaming PCs, creative workstations and laptops with a fast M.2 slot, and fanxiang also lists it as compatible with the PS5. Below is what the numbers mean and what to confirm first.

What PCIe 4.0 x4 and NVMe mean

NVMe is the protocol that lets a drive talk directly to the processor over PCIe lanes, instead of going through the older SATA interface. PCIe 4.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, and a x4 connection uses four lanes. fanxiang says the S880E uses a Gen 4 x4 controller with NVMe 2.0 technology and reaches sequential speeds of up to 7100MB/s for reads and 6100MB/s for writes. Those are peak sequential figures; everyday loading and copying depends on file sizes and the rest of the system.

Gaming and the PS5

The brand says the drive supports DirectStorage, a Windows technology that lets games load assets more directly from fast storage. It also lists compatibility with the PS5. Console storage upgrades have their own requirements, typically covering speed, size and cooling, so check the console maker's current guidance before buying.

Work and creative use

fanxiang describes the 3D NAND flash as suited to short boot times, quick application loading and file processing, including for video editors under heavy workloads. In general, a fast drive helps most with large project files, scratch disks and big libraries, where waiting on storage is noticeable.

Heat control

Fast NVMe drives can run warm, and many slow themselves down when they get too hot. fanxiang says the label is built with a graphite-coated copper foil layer and an aluminium foil layer to help reduce temperature, so that read speeds stay near their peak during demanding games. Many motherboards and some laptops add their own heatsink. If you use one, check that there is clearance for the drive and label together.

Size and warranty

The S880E measures about 3.1 x 0.9 x 0.1 inches (the 2280 form factor: 22mm wide, 80mm long) and weighs about 0.1 lb. fanxiang says it comes with five years of after-sales service and lifetime technical support, and describes itself as having more than 20 years of manufacturing experience.

Who it suits

It suits desktop builders and laptop owners with a free M.2 PCIe 4.0 slot, gamers wanting faster loading, and creators who move large files. If your system supports only PCIe 3.0, the drive typically still works, but it will run at that slot's lower speed.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot type: confirm the M.2 slot supports NVMe and is the 2280 length.
  • PCIe generation: a PCIe 4.0 slot is needed to reach the rated speeds.
  • Console use: check the PS5 requirements, including heatsink and clearance.
  • Cooling: see whether your motherboard or laptop provides a heatsink and room for one.
  • Capacity: 1TB suits a main drive or a modest game library; large libraries may need more.
  • Migrating: plan a clone or fresh install, and back up first.
