The eufyCam E40 kit is a pair of wireless outdoor security cameras that recharge themselves from a built-in solar panel, together with a HomeBase 2 hub that stores footage on the premises. It is aimed at people who want to watch the outside of a home without running power cables to each camera.

What 2K and MaxColor night vision mean

The cameras record in 2K QHD. In general, a higher resolution than 1080p gives more detail when you zoom into a recording, which helps when you want to make out a face or a number plate at a distance. eufy says its MaxColor Vision keeps footage in full colour in very low light, rather than switching to the black-and-white image that infrared night modes typically produce. How well that works depends on the ambient light where you mount the camera.

Solar power with SolarPlus 2.0

Each camera has an integrated solar panel and eufy's SolarPlus 2.0 charging technology. The brand says the camera stays powered on cloudy days or in partial shade, and that you can add an external panel to extend coverage. As a general rule, solar charging works best with a few hours of daylight on the panel, so a spot facing the sun makes a difference. A camera in deep shade may need the external panel.

Motion detection with a PIR sensor

The cameras use an upgraded passive infrared (PIR) sensor. PIR sensors typically react to the heat of a moving person or animal rather than to any change in the picture, which tends to cut down on false alerts from shifting shadows or moving leaves. Settings in the app let you tune what you are notified about.

HomeBase 2 and local storage

The HomeBase 2 is the hub the cameras connect to. It has 16 GB of built-in storage, so recordings are kept at home rather than needing a cloud subscription. eufy lists this as a feature of the kit. The hub also manages the cameras together and typically has to stay plugged in and within wireless range of them.

Smart home integration

eufy says the cameras work with Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can ask a compatible display or speaker to show a camera or use it in routines. Check that your own devices and the app version support the features you want.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners and renters with outdoor spots that have no convenient outlet, such as a side gate, a shed or a driveway edge, and who prefer to keep footage on a device they own. Each camera measures about 5.2 x 2.6 x 2.7 inches (13 x 6.6 x 6.9 cm).

What to check before you buy

  • Sunlight: note how many hours of direct light the mounting spot gets, and whether an external panel would help.
  • Wi-Fi and hub placement: the HomeBase 2 needs power and a network connection; confirm cameras can reach it from where you want them.
  • Storage: 16 GB holds a limited amount of footage, so check how long recordings are kept and how the hub handles older clips.
  • Smart home: confirm your voice assistant or HomeKit setup is supported.
  • Local rules: check local rules and neighbours' privacy before pointing a camera at shared spaces.
  • What's in the box: this is a two-camera kit with a hub; extra panels are separate.
