The D-Link DGS-1100-16V2 is a 16-port Gigabit Ethernet switch with web-based management. It sits in the smart managed class: more control than a plug-and-play switch, without the complexity of a full enterprise unit. D-Link positions the DGS-1100 series for small and medium businesses, with uses such as surveillance and VoIP.

Sixteen Gigabit ports

All sixteen ports are 10/100/1000BASE-T, which means each one negotiates the fastest speed the connected device supports, up to 1 Gbps. That covers computers, printers, access points, network storage and IP cameras. These ports do not supply power over Ethernet, so any camera or phone that needs PoE will need its own power source or injector.

What VLANs and QoS do

D-Link lists Quality of Service (QoS) and VLAN support. VLANs split one physical switch into separate logical networks, for example keeping guest devices, cameras and office computers apart. QoS lets the switch give priority to time-sensitive traffic such as voice calls, so they stay smooth when the network is busy. D-Link says these tools help boost security and manage traffic efficiently. The listing also mentions cable diagnostics, which typically let you check a cable for faults from the management page.

Setup and management

D-Link points to its Network Assistant Utility for setup and ongoing administration, on-site or remotely. Smart managed switches like this are typically configured from a web page, and the utility helps you find the switch on your network. Plan a few minutes to set an administrator password and update the firmware as the manual describes.

Fanless and quiet

The switch has no fans, which D-Link says makes it silent and suited to quiet places such as libraries and offices. A fanless design relies on the case and vents to shed heat, so keep the vents clear and avoid stacking items on top. D-Link also describes D-Link Green technology for reduced power consumption, and lists the unit as NDAA compliant, which can matter for some government-related buyers.

Size and mounting

It measures about 11.0 by 7.0 by 1.7 inches and weighs 2.6 lb. The listing says it works on a desktop or in a rack. Check what mounting hardware is included in the box if you plan to use a rack.

Who it suits

It suits a small office, workshop or home network that has outgrown a basic 8-port switch and wants VLANs and traffic priority without a steep learning curve. It is also a sensible fit where noise matters.

What to check before you buy

  • Port count: make sure 16 ports covers your devices today with a few spare.
  • PoE: confirm none of your devices need power from the switch.
  • Speed: this is a Gigabit switch; check whether you need faster uplinks.
  • Management style: confirm you are comfortable with a web interface and the utility.
  • Placement: leave room around the case for heat to escape, and check the mounting hardware if racking it.
  • Warranty: D-Link lists a lifetime warranty; read the terms for your region.

The short version

  • 16 x 10/100/1000BASE-T ports, L2 smart managed.
  • VLAN and QoS support, plus cable diagnostics.
  • Fanless design for quiet operation.
  • Desktop or rackmount; 2.6 lb.
  • No PoE listed.
