The Cisco Business CBS220-24T-4G is a rack-sized network switch with 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 1G SFP ports. It is a "smart" switch, which sits between a plain unmanaged switch and a fully managed one: you get settings such as security controls and monitoring without the complexity of a large enterprise device. It is built for small and medium business networks, and the model number is CBS220-24T-4G-NA.

Ports and what they are for

The switch has 24 ports that run at 10/100/1000Mbps, which covers computers, printers, access points and other devices. Four extra 1G SFP ports accept optional fibre or copper modules, typically used for uplinks to another switch or a link over longer distances than copper can manage. The listing mentions that the wider CBS220 range covers eight to 48 ports and PoE+ combinations. This particular model does not list PoE, so it will not power devices over the cable; check the PoE models if you need that.

Managing it

Cisco describes three ways to run the switch: an on-box user interface, a mobile app and the Cisco Business Dashboard, which is intended to simplify operations and automate lifecycle management across several devices. For a small office, a browser-based interface is usually enough to set up VLANs, check port status and apply updates, while the dashboard is for those who manage more than one site.

Security features

The listing highlights IEEE 802.1X, which controls which devices and users can connect to the network, plus denial-of-service (DoS) attack prevention and access control lists (ACLs). ACLs are rules that allow or block traffic according to criteria you set. Cisco says these together protect the network from unauthorized users and help keep it up during an attack. As with any network gear, the security you get depends on how you configure it and keep the firmware current.

Design and placement

Cisco describes the design as compact and suitable for installation outside a wiring closet, such as in retail stores, open-plan offices and classrooms. It measures about 17.3 x 8.0 x 1.7 inches (44 x 20 x 4.3 cm) and weighs about 9.4 lb (4.3 kg). Cisco says some models in the range are fanless; check the model you buy against the manual if silent operation matters.

Energy use

The switch complies with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet, which reduces power on links when they are idle. Cisco says this lowers operating costs.

Warranty and support

Cisco lists a three-year limited hardware warranty with return-to-factory replacement and one year of technical support.

Who it suits

It suits offices, shops and schools that have outgrown a basic eight-port switch and want a tidy 24-port device with some security and monitoring controls. It is also useful for people who want to add fibre uplinks later through the SFP ports.

What to check before you buy

  • Port count: make sure 24 ports plus four SFP slots covers your devices and future growth.
  • PoE needs: this model does not list Power over Ethernet, so cameras and phones that rely on it need another power source.
  • SFP modules: modules are separate; check which types the switch accepts.
  • Mounting: confirm whether you plan to rack-mount it or put it on a shelf, and what hardware is included.
  • Network skills: a smart switch needs some setup knowledge, such as VLANs and access rules.
  • Ventilation and power: follow the manual for placement and connection.

The short version

  • A 24-port 10/100/1000 smart switch with four 1G SFP ports (CBS220-24T-4G-NA).
  • Managed through an on-box interface, mobile app or Cisco Business Dashboard.
  • 802.1X, DoS prevention and ACLs for access control.
  • IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet.
  • Three-year limited hardware warranty and one year of technical support.
