The Brother P-touch PT-D610BT is a desktop label maker aimed at businesses that label stock, cables, bins and equipment. The PT-D610BTVP version adds a carry case. It works on its own from a built-in keyboard, or from a computer or phone over USB or Bluetooth. Here is what the features mean and what to confirm first.

Labelling on its own or from a device

The label maker has a full QWERTY keyboard and one-touch formatting keys, so short labels can be typed and printed without any other device. A 20-character, two-line colour LCD lets you preview a label before printing, which helps avoid wasted tape.

For longer or more complex jobs, Brother says you can connect by the included USB cable or by Bluetooth. On a computer, the free P-touch Editor software offers drawing tools, imported images, barcodes and QR codes. On Android or iOS devices, the iPrint&Label app does similar work. Brother also says several users can share one label maker from their own computers or devices.

Brother describes the printing as high resolution, aimed at sharper barcodes and crisp logos. The label maker offers 17 fonts, 17 font styles, 160 frames and 900 symbols. The listing says it prints up to eight lines of text in one place and up to seven in another, so check the manual for the exact limit for your tape width.

There are 175 preloaded templates for business uses such as asset management and date and time tracking. Memory holds up to 90 labels for quick reprinting, which suits labels you print again and again, such as shelf tags or cable identifiers. A built-in automatic cutter trims each label, and Brother says printing is faster than earlier models on high-volume jobs.

TZe tapes and what they're for

The machine uses Brother TZe laminated tapes up to about 1 inch (24 mm) wide. Brother says its genuine TZe range includes security tapes, flexible ID tapes for cables and premium tapes in a range of finishes and colours, and describes the labels as suited to indoor and outdoor items. Tape is not necessarily included, so check the box contents. The VP version lists a carry case and a 4 m sample of black-on-clear tape, 12 mm wide.

Everyday uses

Brother points to retail shops, warehouses, storerooms and service businesses. Typical jobs include labelling stock and SKUs, tracking assets and equipment, naming cables and wires, marking lockers and bins, printing ID badges and making shelf tags. Barcode and QR code support helps when labels need to be scanned.

Who it suits

It suits small businesses, offices, workshops and stockrooms that print labels often and want a keyboard-free option through software, or a handheld option without it. For the occasional home label, a simpler model may be enough, since this one is aimed at professional use.

What to check before you buy

  • Tape width and type: confirm the TZe cassettes you need work with this model and fit your widest label.
  • Connectivity: check that your computer or phone supports the software and Bluetooth connection.
  • Power: an AC adapter and USB cable are listed as included; check whether you want battery use as well.
  • Volume: consider how many labels you print, as tape cassettes are a recurring need.
  • What's in the box: confirm whether you're getting the VP version with the carry case and sample tape.
