The Brother P-touch PT-D460BTVP is a desktop label maker that prints on TZe laminated tape up to about 3/4 inch (18 mm) wide. It can be used on its own with the built-in keyboard, or connected to a computer or phone over USB or Bluetooth. It is aimed at offices, shops and workshops that need to label shelves, cables, files and stock without sending anything out to be printed.

Typing labels on the device

The label maker has a QWERTY keyboard, one-touch formatting keys and a backlit screen that shows 20 characters across 2 lines. Brother says the screen lets you preview a label before you print it, which saves tape on longer or more complex labels.

For design, Brother lists 16 fonts, 15 font styles, 140 designer frames and 700 symbols. It also stores up to 70 frequently used label layouts, so a label you print often, such as a shelf tag or an equipment ID, can be recalled rather than retyped. Forty preloaded templates cover tasks like asset management and cable labelling.

Connecting by Bluetooth or USB

The "connected" part of the name refers to Bluetooth and USB. Brother says you can design and print from a computer using the P-touch Editor software, or from an Android or iOS device using the iPrint&Label app. The software supports barcodes and QR codes, imported images and logos, which is how a label maker moves from simple name tags to inventory and product labelling.

Brother also says multiple users can connect to the same label maker over Bluetooth, each from their own computer or device. In a shared office this means one machine can serve several people. Brother notes that an additional download is needed for the software and that app compatibility can vary by operating system, so it is worth checking your own device.

What TZe tape offers

TZe tapes are Brother's laminated label tapes. The listing mentions several types: standard tape, extra-strength adhesive, security tapes, flexible ID tape for wrapping around cables, and premium tapes in a range of finishes and colours. Because the printer takes widths up to about 18 mm, you can choose a size to suit the job, from a narrow cable flag to a larger shelf label.

In general, laminated tape resists smudging and everyday handling better than ink printed on paper, but how a label holds up still depends on the surface and the environment.

What comes in the box

The listing says the package includes an AC adapter, a USB cable and a sample cassette of black-on-white tape (4 m, 18 mm). The VP version adds a carry case and a sample cassette of black-on-clear tape (4 m, 12 mm). The unit measures about 6.0 x 14.2 x 13.3 inches as shipped and weighs 6.0 lb.

Where it fits

Brother points to small and mid-sized offices, retail spaces and restaurants. Typical jobs include labelling storage racks and bins, office equipment, wiring, supply closets and lockers, and sealing confidential file boxes with tamper-evident tape. Brother also lists its PT-D610BT as the step up for high-volume work, with a colour screen, faster printing, an automatic cutter and 24 mm tape.

What to check before you buy

  • Tape width: confirm that 18 mm and narrower TZe tapes cover the labels you need. Wider labels need a different model.
  • Your devices: check that the P-touch Editor software and iPrint&Label app support your computer and phone.
  • Tape supply: TZe cassettes are consumables, so check which finishes and colours you will want and that they are easy to source.
  • Volume: if you print large batches, consider whether a model with an automatic cutter would suit better.
  • Version: the VP model includes a carry case; check which version you are choosing.
