The ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh system designed to remove dead zones in larger or multi-storey homes. This listing is for a single white unit, which can work as a router on its own or join other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers to form a whole-home network. Here is what its specs mean.
What a mesh system does
A conventional router sits in one place, and the signal weakens with distance and walls. A mesh system uses several units placed around the home that share one network name, so devices connect to whichever is closest as you move. ASUS says the XT9's antenna placement delivers strong Wi-Fi in every corner, and describes the system as suited to large houses and multi-storey homes. This listing is for a pack of one, so coverage across a big home generally means adding more units.
Tri-band and the 7800 Mbps figure
Tri-band means three radio bands: one at 2.4GHz and two at 5GHz. ASUS gives a combined wireless speed of 7800 Mbps and a coverage figure of 260 square metres. The total adds together the theoretical maximums of all bands, so no single device will reach it. The second 5GHz band is often used to link the mesh units to each other, which helps keep speeds up for connected devices. Real performance depends on walls, distance and interference.
Wi-Fi 6 features
ASUS highlights OFDMA and MU-MIMO. OFDMA lets the router split a channel into smaller parts to serve several devices in the same transmission, and MU-MIMO lets it talk to multiple devices at once. Together they are meant to keep the network efficient and stable when many devices are busy. These benefits apply to devices that support Wi-Fi 6.
Ports and wired connections
The unit has a 2.5 Gigabit WAN/LAN port and three Gigabit LAN ports. The faster port suits a quick internet connection or a high-speed wired device. The description notes support for wired connections between routers, known as wired backhaul. A cable between mesh units is usually more reliable than a wireless link. It also supports flexible SSID configuration.
Security and management
The system includes AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro. ASUS describes this as free network security that protects the privacy of connected devices. Setup uses the ASUS Router app, which ASUS describes as a three-step installation. Check the app and the manual for what security options and settings are available.
AiMesh
AiMesh support means you can combine the XT9 with other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers, mixing models. This makes it practical to start with one unit and expand later.
Size
The unit measures about 6.3 x 3.0 x 6.3 inches (16 x 7.6 x 16 cm) and weighs 1.6 lb (about 0.7 kg).
Who it suits
It suits larger or multi-level homes with many devices, and people who want to expand coverage over time with additional AiMesh-compatible units.
What to check before you buy
- Home size: one unit may not cover a large home; consider whether you need more.
- Pack size: this listing is a single unit.
- Internet plan: check whether your modem and plan can use the 2.5G port.
- Device support: Wi-Fi 6 benefits require Wi-Fi 6 devices.
- Cabling: wired backhaul needs network cables between units.
- Security terms: read what the included protection covers.
The short version
- A single tri-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh unit rated at 7800 Mbps combined.
- One 2.5G WAN/LAN port and three Gigabit LAN ports.
- OFDMA, MU-MIMO and AiProtection Pro by Trend Micro.
- AiMesh support for adding more ASUS routers; the ASUS Router app for setup.
- ASUS cites coverage of about 260 square metres.
