The ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 (XT8) is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh router. This listing is for a single unit, which can serve as a standalone router or as the first node of a larger mesh system. ASUS says it covers up to 2,750 square feet and four or more rooms. Here is what the specs mean for a home network.

What tri-band mesh means

A mesh system uses several devices that work together as one network, so that you can walk through a home and stay connected without switching networks. Tri-band means each unit has three radio bands: one 2.4 GHz and two 5 GHz. Mesh systems often dedicate one band to carrying traffic between nodes, which typically helps keep speeds up for devices as the network grows. The 6600Mbps figure is a combined theoretical total across all bands, and the speed any one device sees will be lower.

Wi-Fi 6 features

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) adds OFDMA and MU-MIMO, both of which ASUS lists. In general, OFDMA lets a router divide a channel to serve several devices at once, and MU-MIMO lets it talk to multiple devices at the same time. Together they help in homes with many phones, laptops, TVs and smart devices at once. To benefit fully, your devices need to support Wi-Fi 6 as well, though older devices still connect.

Coverage and placement

ASUS lists coverage up to 2,750 square feet, but its disclaimer notes that actual speeds and coverage depend on building materials, construction and network traffic. Thick walls, floors and metal can reduce range. For larger homes, you can add units, and the listing says ZenWiFi works with AiMesh, ASUS's system for combining compatible routers into one network.

Setup, app and security

ASUS promotes a three-step setup using the ASUS Router app, which is also used for managing the network afterwards. The listing mentions three SSIDs, parental control and lifetime free network security powered by Trend Micro. Check the manufacturer's page to see exactly what each security and parental feature includes and how it works.

Power and size

The unit measures about 6.3 x 3.0 x 6.4 inches and weighs 1.6 lb. It accepts a 110V to 240V mains input, and the adapter provides DC output at 19V (up to 1.75A) or 12V (up to 3A), depending on the region and model.

Who it suits

It suits homes where one router leaves weak spots, such as multi-room apartments, two-storey houses and homes with many connected devices. It also suits people who already own an AiMesh-compatible ASUS router and want to extend it.

What to check before you buy

  • Number of units: this listing is one unit; a larger home may need more.
  • Your internet plan: the router can't exceed your service speed.
  • Wired connections: check the number and type of Ethernet ports for your gear, and whether a wired link between nodes is possible.
  • AiMesh compatibility: confirm your existing router is on ASUS's supported list.
  • Security features: read what is included and how long.
  • Placement: try to place nodes where they can see each other, not behind thick walls.

The short version

  • A single tri-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh unit with 6600Mbps combined.
  • OFDMA and MU-MIMO for busy networks, with ASUS quoting coverage up to 2,750 sq ft.
  • AiMesh support for adding compatible ASUS routers.
  • App-based setup, parental controls and free network security from Trend Micro.
  • Real speeds depend on your home and your devices.
