ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 WiFi 7 Mesh System: features, specs and who it suits

The ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 is a dual-band WiFi 7 mesh unit rated at 3600 Mbps and 2450 sq. ft., with dual 2.5G ports and AiMesh. What the specs mean.

The ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 is a compact dual-band WiFi 7 router that can work on its own or as part of a mesh system. This listing is the single-pack version. ASUS rates it at up to 3600 Mbps and says one unit covers about 2,450 sq. ft. (roughly 228 square metres). Here's what the main features mean at home.

What WiFi 7 adds

WiFi 7 (802.11be) is the generation after WiFi 6 and 6E. ASUS lists two features for the BD4. MLO, or Multi-Link Operation, lets a compatible device use more than one band at once, which can improve reliability and reduce delays. 4K-QAM packs more data into each radio signal for higher peak speeds. Both need compatible client devices, and older phones and laptops still connect but at their own supported speed.

This is a dual-band model, so it uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz, not the 6GHz band that tri-band WiFi 7 routers add. The 3600 Mbps figure is a combined theoretical rate across bands, and a single device won't reach it.

AiMesh and coverage

ASUS AiMesh joins compatible ASUS routers into one network with a single network name, so devices can move around the home without manual reconnecting. ASUS says the BD4 can be extended with compatible ASUS routers, so a larger home can add units later.

For coverage, the BD4 has four internal antennas and four high-power front-end modules, which ASUS says reduce dead zones. Real range depends on walls, floors and interference, and the coverage area is the brand's figure for a single unit.

Wired connections

There are dual 2.5G Ethernet ports with auto detection. 2.5G ports let a wired device or a connection from a fast internet service run beyond the 1 Gbps limit of Gigabit ports, if the rest of the chain supports it. Check how the ports are assigned in ASUS's documentation.

Security, parental controls and smart home features

ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, which it calls commercial-grade, 24/7 end-to-end protection, and support for advanced VPNs. Parental controls and an IoT network are included, and the Smart Home Master SSIDs feature lets you set up separate networks for smart home devices, VPN or family access through a simple setup. Separating smart devices from your main devices is generally considered good network practice.

Hardware

The unit has a quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU and what ASUS describes as robust cooling. It measures about 5.5 x 2.8 x 5.5 inches (roughly 14 x 7 x 14 cm) and weighs 1.2 lb (about 0.54 kg), so it sits easily on a shelf.

Who it suits

It suits a small to medium home that wants WiFi 7 features, wired 2.5G, strong parental and security tools and the option to add AiMesh units later. Because the Wi-Fi bands are limited to two, households with many demanding devices may want to compare tri-band options.

What to check before you buy

  • Your internet connection: confirm what your provider supplies and whether the router can connect to it directly or sits behind a modem.
  • Client devices: WiFi 7 benefits only show up with WiFi 7 devices.
  • Home size and layout: one unit may not cover a large or multi-storey home, so consider whether to add more.
  • AiMesh compatibility: check which ASUS models work together.
  • Wired speeds: 2.5G only helps if your devices and cables support it.
  • Setup: ASUS's app or web interface will be used for setup, so check the current requirements.

The short version

  • Dual-band WiFi 7 router rated at 3600 Mbps, with MLO and 4K-QAM.
  • ASUS says one unit covers 2,450 sq. ft., with AiMesh for expansion.
  • Dual 2.5G Ethernet ports.
  • AiProtection Pro, parental controls and IoT network features.
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz processor in a compact 1.2 lb body.
